Some advice please......

Hi all,

Having read as many posts as possible to answer the many questions I have, I now realise that I need some help!  My husband (aged 41 years, developer programmer) and I (aged 40 years, secondary school teacher) wish to emigrate to Aus.  We would like to get a 189 skilled independent visa but wonder who it is best to put on the application?  Is one occupation better/preferred than the other?

I thought that maybe computer programmers would be more desirable than secondary teachers especially as my specialism at secondary is Citizenship (with English).  I have put together some basic information on each of us below.  I was hoping that someone more knowledgeable than ourselves could take a look and give us an opinion.  Many thanks.

Husband - Computer Developer

  • Employed/self employed in the above position for over 20 years
  • Spent Criminal conviction for affray (2004)
  • Suffers from Crohns disease, last hospitalisation 7 years ago.

Me: I have a psychology degree and my pgce is for Citizenship with English.  I have been a psychology teacher for the past 14 years.  No medical or criminals issues.

A second question: Should we use a migration agency and if so which one is best?

Many thanks all x Marie x

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but your husbands conviction and health issues may be mean he will not be able to obtain a PR Visa. You would need a MA and a strategy.. There is a few on here that probably do have such experience.

What was your husbands sentence?

I would definitely have a chat with an agent to see which path is the best for you. For convictions they usually say anything over 12 month jail sentence is an issue so he may be ok.

Actually, the criminal conviction shouldn't be too big a deal. He will need to declare it and will get asked for details. But shouldn't be an issue. The Crohn's disease though may be a bigger issue and medical issues don't just affect the primary applicant.

My advice would be to run it past a specialist agent such as George Lombard.
