Cegor
Hubby will be moving ahead of me next month and will buy a vehicle. He will have a rental probably for the first two weeks. Question : can he buy a car while he still has his Canadian driver's license or will he need to convert to Oz driver's first? he will be in short term rental (hotel) until he finds the permanent place to live. I have read he needs a local address in order to get his Oz driver's and insurance, so how can he buy a car, driver's and insurance if he still yet to find the place to move into? he will be buying the car cash but obviously he needs insurance. Can he buy it without having found a place to live? sadly for us we won't have any of his relatives where we are moving. We are moving to Sydney and his clan is in Brisbane so giving their address doesn't help. We just got back to Canada after a 10 day visit to Oz to activate my visa (yay so happy for that) and he managed to find a job (thrilled about that too :)). So technically his employer is the only permanent address he will have Renting a car for more than a month will start to get pricey and he will need a vehicle to get to his job. Guest
Have you looked up the rules for NSW? https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/transfer-overseas-driver-licence http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/licence/identity/ He should be able to convert his licence easily enough. IIRC when we arrived in SA I got my medicare and bank card sorted first, within first few days, then DL followed as I then could meet the 100 points of ID required. I also found this googling 'NSW, used car registration' https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/use-vehicle-registration-calculator You may need to do some searching re the insurance as there are many companies offering cover. I don't know Sydney but he may have been better off finding a short term holiday rental somewhere and using this as his address. I've heard of other people doing this when arriving in other states. simmo
Buying a car in Australia is a wall of bureaucracy and very expensive. Make sure you do your homework. Good Luck

Good Luck No idea where you get that from? Buying a car for the daughter was one of the easiest transactions we’ve undertaken. Select vehicle, agree on price, request rego state change and increase to 12 mths, and pickup in 2 days. Couldn’t be simpler

Good Luck I agree 2nd Hand cars can be expensive, but there isn’t a wall of bureaucracy if you buy from a dealer it’s just a quick and easy process. The only times when it gets complicated is if you purchase a car privately you need to make sure it has a safety certificate (called different things depending on State, but basically like a UK MOT) then you need to go to Qld Transport with the safety certificate and a transfer form, you will need to pay government fees (on a $15,000 car around $400) then a transfer fee. You will also be wanting to run checks to see if there is no finance owed or if the car has been stolen or written off. Obviously each state is different. Yes he can purchase a car without a permanent address if any car showroom tells you different ask them to show you the law regarding this. I’ve only ever heard of one family refused who were in Victoria and that was the Toyota Dealership and a new salesman who had no idea. I called them up on their behalf and they apologised for the error. Applying for your license - you may have to submit a stat declaration but I think that’s only VicRoads who are anal about that. NSW tend to ask for passport/visa and a bank card so that should be easy. http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/licence/moving-to-nsw.html Yes you can purchase insurance online, he can either use his hotel address or his friends in Qld and change it once you have a place. Cegor
thank you everyone for your input. Will get hubby to check out the links provided. You guys are awesome! He hasn't booked a hotel as of yet. We are looking at airbnb at the present but we have never done that before so we are a little concerned of getting scammed this is happening all too quick as we originally went to Oz to activate my visa but he ended up getting a job and starts next month so we thought at first we had 6 months to sort out our stuff in Canada but now he is leaving to Oz and I'm staying to deal with everything .....yikes!
WayneM
Airbnb was completely new to me until a couple of months ago, since then I've used it a few times when staying in cities in the UK that are a bit far from home, I found it pretty good, they collected ID off me and all sorts and my hosts have always been great. I am thinking (assuming the visa process works out positively) to go ahead of my family in a similar way to what your husband is doing and will most likely use airbnb for it. If you stick to the site's policies and use airbnb hosts with good reviews, I wouldn't be worried about scams personally, and I am sure they're more economical than a standard hotel.
