Serendipity
Hi We (husband and two children ages 8 and 10) are flying up to Brisbane from NSW in 2 weeks for a 5 day trip, to have a look round and a bit of an explore. Can anyone recommend things to do, not to miss out (or definately miss out!). What areas would you be looking for accommodation in that won't make getting around too difficult. What's the best way of getting around in Brisbane? Is it worth hiring a car when we're there? What's the best thing for kids to do in Brisbane? Thank you
Guest The Pom Queen
Hi @Serendipity are you looking for a holiday or moving to? If a holiday then I’d recommend the Sunshine or Gold Coast, the Gold Coast probably for the children. There is a 3 hour (without traffic) drive time between Noosa Heads (Top of Sunshine) to Coolangatta (South of GC). Then of course you have Brisbane City itself, outer suburbs, the mountains etc. Once I know if it’s for a holiday or potential move (if so would you be working in Brisbane CBD) I can help more. Serendipity
Hi It's just for a short trip - 5 days. I think we'd prefer to explore Brisbane City itself, maybe the mountains would be good. We live on the Central Coast in NSW so are 5 mins away from stunning beaches anytime, so not desperate to be near the beach. But any suggestions for things to do in the city and/ or outer suburbs. Guest The Pom Queen
Southbank is lovely, cafes, markets, lagoons and pools, a ferry across to the city which has good shopping, museums, the botanical gardens (in fact if the kids can ride bikes you can hire push bikes right outside the gardens and then use the cycle paths to ride along the river bank). You could have a day out at Tamborine Mountain http://www.discovertamborine.com.au/tamborine-mountain-maps/ or O’Reillys. https://oreillys.com.au/ You could head off to see an aerial view of Brisbane and the river, the website link is to the cafe up there you don’t need to visit the cafe the lookout is seperate https://www.brisbanelookout.com/kuta-cafe Obviously you have zoos and theme parks and the dinner shows. There is lots more to do. I could spend 5 days just on Southbank and the city.
calNgary
I would hire a car then you can explore more. You should definately have a day on the Sunny coast and one on the Gold Coast, they are so chalk and cheese in comparrison but both great places.. You could drive up Mt Coota and visit the planatarium- https://www.visitbrisbane.com.au/information/articles/activities/things-to-do-mt-coot-tha?sc_lang=en-au Jump on a river ferry / city cat and stop off at New Farm Park - https://www.visitbrisbane.com.au/brisbane/things-to-do/nature-and-wildlife/parks-and-gardens/new-farm-park?sc_lang=en-au Visit Eat Street Markets - https://www.queensland.com/restaurant/eat-street-northshore Spend some time in Redcliffe and visit the Lagoon - https://www.brisbanekids.com.au/redcliffe-lagoon/ Visit the Maritime museum or Science museum - https://www.brisbanekids.com.au/activities/museums-galleries/ I agree with the Pom Queen in that there is sooo much more to do, i too could spend a week in the city and never run out of places to see, just shortlist what suits you best and enjoy... Serendipity
Would the South Bank be an area to look for accommodation? Nothing fancy, like an airbnb or chalet? Which areas of Brisbane have campsites with chalets?
calNgary
Brisbane Holiday Village would be quite central for exploring but its not 'in' the city. - https://www.brisbaneholidayvillage.com.au/ or Brisbane Gateway http://www.brisbanegateway.com.au/ To stay inner city around Southbank you wouldnt get cabins, its mainly hotels and apartments, AIRBNB or Stayz would be your best bet to find something else. DT55
Hi Depending on budget I would try to stay in South Bank. The campsite is in Newmarket.... It's nice but it's more of a residential area. If you don't mind the 15 min train journey to the city it's fine (and you won't have to pay to park your car if you decide to hire one). Stuff to do not mentioned by the others (depending on what you like doing) : - Lone pine koala sanctuary - Rock climbing on kangaroo point - Storey Bridge Climb If you go to gold coast hinterland I recommend the glow worm caves at Nateral Bridge. Its free and depending on the time of year you can see fireflies also. Good luck and enjoy! Edited April 5, 2018 by DT55
Guest The Pom Queen
We recently stayed down there for a concert. I struggled finding a double room/apartment cheap for those dates then I found one for $101 for a 2 bed apartment and booked the Brisbane Skytower https://www.hotels.com/ho614702688/?tab=description I nearly changed at the last minute as the reviews on TripAdvisor weren’t great. Basically it’s going to be the tallest tower in Brisbane and they say will be $500 pn when complete. The downside is some of the rooms have lifts going up to the building works at the top, some of the reviews said you get woke up at 5am. We honestly didn’t hear anything all our time there, maybe we were lucky. They are building up to 90 floors high we were on floor 30. Here are some photos of our room, it was small but we were out most of the time. For $101 (if they still have that rate) and the location it was worth the chance and we were happy. The lift only passed our window once much to our disappointment it looked entertaining to see them constructing the tallest tower in Brissy. Guest The Pom Queen
Forgot to say the view is of the Botanical gardens and it’s one street away from the centre
