AITSL Teacher skills assessment

Hello all

HELP!! I completed a three year Design Technology Education degree and have since been teaching in the UK for 8 years.

I have moved out to aus and looking to go through the skilled independent visa route.

I have to have my skills assessed by AITSL but they are requesting a 4 year period in Uni. I only have three as the degree made you a fully qualified teacher in that time period.

Has anyone been through this or knows anyone that has and still had a successful skill assessment with just three years.

Thanks for any help!!!! :)

You won't get it with three years, you need four.

Hi everyone,

I applied to the AITSL for secondary school teacher a while ago, its been over six weeks since they have received the application. Its a bit crazy that there is no way to check progress on these applications considering how expensive they are. Does anybody know if this time frame is normal? if there was something wring would they have contacted me by now? just concerned since the appeals process is just apply again and pay the fee again

any help would be much appreciated

Depends on the number of points you had. How much do you have?

I got my skills assessment for Secondary School Teacher from AITSL in November.

The website says it takes 10 weeks to process the application. They emailed me after 9 weeks to say they’d posted the result and it arrived a few days later.

I was panicking with mine too but from what I found online, most of them take around 10 weeks :)

Do you know if an art fundation Level 3/4 in the UK will help towards the four years?

No, an art foundation course will not count towards the four years as it is not a university level course.

You will need to do one more year of university study, preferably in a related area. People in your situation often undertake a one year Masters to top up to the required four years needed. Graduates in Australia require four years of university study to be able to teach and be registered, it is the same for overseas applicants.

thank you so much for the reply - this whole process has me on edge

Can I ask if you've gone ahead and applied for a visa?

I filled out the application for my wife and that took around 6 weeks. It was just before Christmas though so they may have had a slump in applications. I wouldn't worry as 9-10 weeks seems to be the norm.

May be a bit late, but its worth asking for the statement of skilled employment as it is no additional charge if requested at the same time. Makes it a little easier when you fill out the visa application.

Thanks for the info, i am probably just worrying for no reason, its very frustrating having to wait on one thing before you can do the next but i guess im in for a long road ahead so may just get use to it

I recieved notification 9 weeks ago that they had recieved my application (secondary school teacher). They contacted me 2 weeks after that asking for clarification regarding my degree (I was awarded umf credits for my HNC, and they wanted to know more about that). I have had to get a letter from my university clarifying. The last correspondence was 2 days ago saying they had recieved the info from the university, and that it could be another 10 weeks till I get the outcome!

Hi I am wondering the same, would anyone know if a post-grad diploma in special ed needs or early years be enough or would a masters be better as its higher? I just want to get this year of study under way.

I post grad would be more than enough, if that’s on top of the teaching degree. What they want is you to have had 45 days of supervised teaching practice and 4 years of university education.

Hi thanks for your message, i have a 3 year BA in primary teaching, 45 days of supervised teaching practice and 3 years experience as a teacher. they've asked me to to do a top up year, but then when i called AITSL they said i would'nt need to study as much? I want to apply for NSW as I know they need special needs teachers? I am so confused as to what they want!

A year’s Masters in Special Ed with the supervised practice requirement should do it.

Can I not do a post grad cert or dip?

PGCE not usually for people with qts.

If you’re looking at your cv and hope to teach in Australia, a Masters would look better, especially if you can specialise in autism. Remember that Australia is a foreign country so the regulations and procedures you might spend time learning as a SENCO might not be relevant. It needs to be one year full time under the auspices of a University with appropriate supervised practice, if you can find a diploma that does that then it’d be ok.

Didnt think NSW was wanting primary teachers these days though unless you have a visa by other means in which case I still wouldn’t be holding my breath for a permanent position.
