Holly Posted April 3, 2018 Share Posted April 3, 2018 Hello all HELP!! I completed a three year Design Technology Education degree and have since been teaching in the UK for 8 years. I have moved out to aus and looking to go through the skilled independent visa route. I have to have my skills assessed by AITSL but they are requesting a 4 year period in Uni. I only have three as the degree made you a fully qualified teacher in that time period. Has anyone been through this or knows anyone that has and still had a successful skill assessment with just three years. Its a bit crazy that there is no way to check progress on these applications considering how expensive they are. The website says it takes 10 weeks to process the application. They emailed me after 9 weeks to say they’d posted the result and it arrived a few days later. No, an art foundation course will not count towards the four years as it is not a university level course. You will need to do one more year of university study, preferably in a related area. People in your situation often undertake a one year Masters to top up to the required four years needed. Graduates in Australia require four years of university study to be able to teach and be registered, it is the same for overseas applicants. It was just before Christmas though so they may have had a slump in applications. I wouldn't worry as 9-10 weeks seems to be the norm. May be a bit late, but its worth asking for the statement of skilled employment as it is no additional charge if requested at the same time. They contacted me 2 weeks after that asking for clarification regarding my degree (I was awarded umf credits for my HNC, and they wanted to know more about that). I have had to get a letter from my university clarifying. The last correspondence was 2 days ago saying they had recieved the info from the university, and that it could be another 10 weeks till I get the outcome! If you’re looking at your cv and hope to teach in Australia, a Masters would look better, especially if you can specialise in autism. Remember that Australia is a foreign country so the regulations and procedures you might spend time learning as a SENCO might not be relevant. It needs to be one year full time under the auspices of a University with appropriate supervised practice, if you can find a diploma that does that then it’d be ok. Didnt think NSW was wanting primary teachers these days though unless you have a visa by other means in which case I still wouldn’t be holding my breath for a permanent position. About the profeional practice, I i 12 week perio , 5 ay each week, which make 60 ay in my lat year of tuie.
