North Brisbane primary schools and SEN

Recommended Posts

Hi,

we are looking at making the move back to Oz to be closer to my husbands family. Our kids have Australian citizenship so we will have no visa problems here.

My son has autism, NHS diagnosed in December 2017. He currently attends a mainstream primary school in the UK but the school has a provision for ASD - although our son doesn’t access this it does mean the SeNCo and teaching staff are incredibly experienced and the school is very inclusive.

My son academically is in line with his peers and so his school work is not an issue but he does receive some 1:1 support for movement breaks/O.T and to set up visual timetables/now and next boards.

Looking at schools in Brisbane as well as media relating to autism in schools in Australia I’m worried that he will find school very challenging.

So my question is how inclusive are state primary schools, will NHS diagnosis be recognised as well as UK occupational therapy reports or will we need to have these redone in Australia?

Lastly if anyone has their own experiences they would like to share if love to read them.

I think @Johndoe would be the perfect person to help here. His son as achieved amazing things.

In regards to “will the NHS diagnosis be recognised” when we moved here with my ADHD son they made us start the process again which was very annoying. I suggest you bring all your reports with you from the NHS along with a report from the school.

If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.

You will find what is required for disability support through a diagnosis of Autism here Disabilities guidebook. Bring with you all paediatric reports including objective assessment of the disability. Also from the school/ed psych all current cognitive assessments, skills assessments and adaptive behaviour assessments. If you’ve got registered professionals conducting the assessments you might get away with them as long as they are current within 2 years (1 year for skills and adaptive behaviours).  Just having the diagnosis isn’t  enough, you have to evidence the significant impact of the disability on every day functioning.

In general, reports from returnees especially, indicate that Aus doesn’t do as well for kids with disabilities as they may experience in U.K.
