sarah harmer
Hi there Can anyone give me an honest opinion on trying to get a rental property in South Australia with a dog? She is a Vizsla, so a larger breed. I have looked on the rental websites and it seems pretty fine, but I don't want to get there to find it a nightmare. Guest
Are you meaning Adelaide area or elsewhere? There are not masses of pet friendly rentals in Adelaide, but there are enough around and you should be able to find something. Bear in mind that many Aussie's keep their dogs outside in back yards 24/7 and pet friendly may mean pet friendly for an outside dog. You need to clarify about keeping a dog indoors perhaps and perhaps be prepared to offer extra bond or some such to secure. Also remember that unless a lease listing states NO PETS, it's always worth asking if a dog would be ok. Have references too if you can to help your case. Also keep in mind that in the more built up suburbs on the flat that it's often dog parks are your only real option for a free run off leash. Peronsally I loathe dog parks (too many large breed dogs that are often not always the sort that mix well) but as your dog is larger she should be able to hold her own. Of course there are trails and so on for walks but it's not great for dogs IMHO. Not if you enjoy long walks off leash that don't involve a beach which in summer only certain times of the day are off leash. If you want to be in a more dog friendly area in terms of trails, open spaces and easy access to national parks like Belair say, focus on the more outer lying suburbs in the foothills, or closer to them. If you are happy with beach walks, look along the coast but perhaps away from the city beach suburbs, look further down the coast. This would also give you more access to getting out of the city to the national parks. There is no right to roam here or public footpaths across farmland like there is in the UK so those sorts of things won't be open to you for dog walks. aconcannon
I know a couple of people who rent in Australia who have indoor dogs. They didn’t have to obtain special permission to have their pets indoors. They’ve just been told they have to have all carpets professionally cleaned when they move out. Pet friendly properties are harder to find but I’m sure you’ll get something. Where we are in Sydney pet friendly properties are like gold dust so most people have pets & don’t declare them. Good luck.
Toots
There are many places here (Devonport) to rent that are pet friendly. I sometimes think dogs make less mess than children.
