simmo
Quote A SHORTAGE of bricklaying apprentices has emerged as young people turn their back on the trade, with claims that some see the job as too much like hard work. There has been an 83 per cent fall in the number of West Australians starting bricklaying apprenticeships in the past two years, from 432 to 74. It comes amid a drop in many other construction trades and a surge in training for less physically strenuous trades and jobs such as bakers, barbers and security personnel. Housing Industry Association executive director John Gelavis said the trade had dropped in popularity compared with those in high-tech industries and less physically arduous sectors. But he recommended the trade, claiming bricklaying and roof carpentry gave workers the most opportunities of all trades. He said they were the most likely to end up as construction managers or site supervisors because their trades gave them a good overall perspective of the building process. https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/wa/bricklayers-struggle-to-find-enough-apprentices-ng-b88736999z Edited February 9, 2018 by simmo
