What is wrong with Perth? Nothing. I could live here as easy as i live in Sydney

I have been enjoying it so much I forgot to log into Poms in Oz and discuss my experiences.

I started off here in 1978 and I went east partly because i coiuld not get a job and partly because i was worried i might go home without seeing the SOH & SHB & Bondi Beach.

This is first time here in 21 years. What do I not like about it? The beaches which all seem to be blowing gales and all have signs to beware of snakes/effluent/submerged rocks/rips and pubs which close even earlier than Pommie pubs. The only place i can find to watch English football after midnight is the casino.

What do I like about it? What passes for a traffic jam in Perth would not even rate a traffic report on Sydney radio. I go out on the north south freeway regularly from my base on Mill Point Road in South Perth and it never seens to have a jam. i stood on the wharf at Mends St at 815 am on a weekday watching the non existent crowds getting on the 815 ferry to Elizabeth Quays (i think?)

i can go for a joy ride in Perth. In Sydney you endure the roads to get from A to B.

What did PB and others hate about Perth? Too isolated from the Eastern States? Who cares?  What do you need to go there for? And Europe is closer - soon a non stop

i go in Windsor pub and have turned it into my local. Exactly as i did in Sydney ditto the cafes.

So? What am I missing?!

The strangest statement I see is that it's too remote...surely people can look on a map...Perth hasn't moved to my knowledge.

That's what I've always thought.  Blind Freddy could work that out.

trouble is with maps it is apparently only men that can visualize that 6 inch's is a mile;)

I do feel that staying in South Perth for a holiday can't really be compared to living here in one of the suburbs. I live in the hills which I love but both the train trip and driving to work in the CBD takes almost an hour in the mornings. I believe  driving on the freeway from both North and South in peak times is a nightmare.

The population has doubled since I've lived here and the infrastructure is very slow to keep up with growth.

As for the remoteness, it's not an issue at first as there's new places to explore but once you've visited them a few times it does get very samey.

Why is it isolated?  Its not like once you get here you cant get out, get on a plane, it not a problem.

That’s right you can’t get anywhere unless you fly.  Everything major in Australia is on the East coast, the West is very isolated

Well I'd like to pop up to Broome every winter but the flights would cost upwards of $450 each, flying to Sydney is at least that plus a 4 hour flight.

No difference really than flying from Uk to say Tenerife for a holiday then, but no one says the UK is isolated!

The UK has a mass of towns and villages all within close proximity of each other. However, you obviously think your opinion is right so carry on.

Because it differs from yours doesn't make it wrong.

This is such a good comment! You're absolutely right. Almost everyone I know in Scotland heads over to somewhere warm in Europe for a short or longer break over summer. Or even further over Christmas to get that "winter sun". I'm not sure myself when people say Perth is isolated. Isolated from what? If it's quaint little towns and history - then you'll have to really go back to the UK to find that - sure some exist in Australia but can it be that?

Isolated from what I've always wondered? Vast millions of people? The Opera House ? (ok yes it's a bit isolated from that!) but what?

It is too isolated from the rest of Australia which is more or less concentrated in the East.  I couldn't live there but we are all different. Can't compare it to the UK in any way. I also found Tassie too isolated when we lived there though it is a lot closer to things than WA and I didn't mind our time there, the people were lovely.

Exactly AJ. I never really get that quote. Sure it is isolated geographically but I bet most people throughout the world spend almost all of their time within a 40 mile radius of where they live.  I do, I go to work, drive about to a few different shopping places as well as leisure places but most of my time it's within say a one hour journey of my home. I can't imagine most people living in Perth would be flying about and travelling hours every week if it wasn't so isolated so why does it make a difference. If you want to travel, book a flight. The other thing that throws me is when people say about the uk being so close to Europe as a reason to return/live there. It is of course but the vast majority of people fly there maybe once a year and that's often on an all inclusive to Majorca. You could be on any island.  Some I'm sure take full advantage of Europe but people say about the Europe thing as if they intend to pop over there every month and very few do.  Not sticking up for Perth, I live in the UK but Perth has got well over a million people living there and many things to do and see, people say it as if it's in the middle of a dessert.

It is hours and hours on a plane to the next large city- that classes as isolated for me. Not like UK to Europe at all- more like UK to Siberia if you like. It takes a week to drive over to Melbourne if you can be bothered. I think it is closer to Bali ( less than 4 hours).

Isn't it less than 3 to Adelaide?

It takes 4 days actually and that is stopping overnight, have done it several times.

2h 50 minutes to Adelaide, 3h 35minutes to Melbourne, 3h 35 minutes to Darwin, 3h 50 minutes to Canberra, 4h 10 to Sydney, 4h 35 minutes to Brisbane.  Going overseas it's 3h 45 to Bali from Perth, 4h 45 to Jakarta, 5h 15 to Singapore.

Clever of you to pick Tenerife and ignore all the other, MUCH closer resorts you can visit from the UK.   So it's not a fair comparison, is it?

Having said that, it's not the remoteness that bothers me about Perth.   The thing about Australia, for me, is that I have such an interesting life that I rarely bother to go on holiday, so I don't much care how far away places are.  But that's the thing with Perth - it's quieter.   I like theatre, shows, dance classes, art, music, writers' groups, etc etc.  All those things do happen in Perth, but much less so than Sydney or Melbourne.  A lot of shows never make it to Perth because it's too expensive to transport the show all that way (and I'm in the business, so I know this for a fact).   That's why I prefer Sydney or Melbourne, because they give me the luxury of choice.
