Hi, please could someone tell me whether it's possible to apply for a Medicare card before you leave the UK, and whether is it recommended that I do so, or is it better to apply for one on arrival to Aus?

I am on a British passport.

Many thanks

AFAIK you need to be here in person and actually resident in Australia. You can’t sign up till you are legally resident in Aus.

I had to go to a Centrelink office, m fill out/answer lots of questions and then was given a temp document and my/our Medicare card arrived in the post.

Hi,

You can't apply hilts in the uk. I tried to do the same! You'll have to go into the centre link office upon arrival and apply for Medicare. It wasn't too much of a headache, just make sure you take a copy of your visa and passports. Make sure you get to the office first thing as you can be waiting for a while to get seen.
