RDB
Hi, please could someone tell me whether it's possible to apply for a Medicare card before you leave the UK, and whether is it recommended that I do so, or is it better to apply for one on arrival to Aus? I am on a British passport. Many thanks Edited January 8, 2018 by RDB
Guest
AFAIK you need to be here in person and actually resident in Australia. You can’t sign up till you are legally resident in Aus. I had to go to a Centrelink office, m fill out/answer lots of questions and then was given a temp document and my/our Medicare card arrived in the post. It wasn't too much of a headache, just make sure you take a copy of your visa and passports. Make sure you get to the office first thing as you can be waiting for a while to get seen.
