Leaving Aus on a one way ticket

Hi there

We are going back to Europe in April for an unknown time. We haven't yet got our Aussie Passports. When we booked the flights the flight centre lady said that we cant use our Aussie passports to leave on a one way ticket anyway so we may as well save the costs of $550 for the passports and just use our UK ones!?. She said we can apply for our Aussie ones from the UK when we want to return.

Has anyone else ever heard of this?

Many thanks

Never heard of this myself.

My understanding is if you now hold Aus citizenship you are meant to depart and re enter Aus on an Aus passport.

Afaik getting a first passport would be easier here in Aus. In the UK you  may have to make an appointment at the Aus consulate in London and attend there for a first passport. Research it though to know for yourselves.

Huh? Quite wrong. Australian citizens are required to enter and leave the country on their Australian passports - although how they can actually stop you leaving on a foreign passport is another matter but they can give you a hard time at departures. As for not leaving on a one way ticket with an Aus passport, what tosh (I’ve done it!). Australia isn’t a jail you can leave forever and never return if you choose not to.  Get your Aussie passports before you go, penny pinching isn’t worth the hassle of wrangling with an immigration jobsworth at departures and jumping through another layer of bureaucratic hoops by getting your first Australian passport overseas.

Especially as getting one offshore usually means a long journey to the nearest High Commission etc in order to do the interview. Much easier onshore.

Do you not think she meant that as you don't know when you are coming back there is no rush to get Australian Passports as you will only need them to re-enter, maybe trying to save you a bit of money just now.

She's still giving wrong advice though. Australian citizens are supposed to leave on an Australian passport and can be given a hard time if they try and do otherwise.

You also need a reference from someone who has known you for a period of time, and the list of occupations is more restrictive than for UK passports.
