Plan to migrate from scratch

Hi

My cousin is 18 years old and about to finish her high school in Belgium. She wants to migrate here in Australia. We would appreciate any advice regarding type of study/career which she can undertake to facilitate her migration. She would like to take a course in TAFE first. Any tip of which course/path she could follow to make her migration journey easy?

She would probably be best studying for a degree in Belgium and getting some experience in her chosen field.  It's hard to predict which careers will be needed/on the skills lists in a few years.

She could come to study - but it would be awfully expensive as an international student and would only be temporary.

Impossible to say as the skills lists change regularly - at least once a year. This year over 200 occupations were removed. There are more big changes coming in 2018 and these days I don't think there is any occupation that can be gauruntee dot be on the list in a few years time. For example, I would have betted good money that doctors would never be removed, but now the Oz government has said it intends to remove them  

The best advice is to study something she enjoys and if it leads to being eligible for a visa, so be it.

As has been said above - that’s like sticking a pin in a list and keeping your fingers crossed. She would be better to choose a course for a career that she is going to love doing for starters and unless she is very wealthy and money is no object she would be better getting some sort of higher degree in Belgium and getting some experience under her belt before thinking of visas. Just because she wants to live in Aus, doesn’t mean she can and it’s probably going to be a 5-10 year plan for her to get there.

Most occupations require a combination of education and then post-education work experience, so it's very difficult to go directly from school to applying for a visa.  As suggested above, probably best that she decide on a career and study for it and if it's possible under that career to migrate in the future then she can look into it at the time.

A TAFE course is unlikely to lead to a visa. Even a university degree rarely does as for most occupations you need a mix of a qualification and a number of years of post qualification experience. All a TAFE course is going to do is cost a huge amount of money

Any tip on which trades are currently in demand? I was told before that some trades require only work experience which can compensate for study as a qualification.

To pass a skills assessment for a trade without having the qualification can be done via what is known as RPL - recognition of prior learning. However, it requires a lot of years of experience. More than would be needed to undertake an apprenticeship and get the necessary post qualification experience. 

She is realistically looking at a fair number of years in order to qualify for a visa and there is no way of knowing what occupations will be in demand by then.
