bristolman
How long are you staying, what time of year, B&B, hotel, camping ? Not much information to go on.

LKC
If there is any possibility you could stay, I'd recommend the going to see the fairy penguins come in at dusk. We took our kids earlier this year, and they loved it.
hookturn
I have only one day to spend there. Any coach tours at good price you can recommend? Driving is not an option for me
Lambethlad
Phillip Island is a good place to kick back and relax for a few days but hardly worth a day trip. You could join the busloads of Chinese tourists who arrive every afternoon. They come to see the penguins and go straight back to the city. If you do that make sure to take a warm coat - it's bloody freezing at night with the wind blowing off the ocean.
starlight7
We often nip down to the Island for a day but a lot easier to see things if you have a car. We have a house down there and we are actually going down there this w/end for a few days. Any chance you could hire a car for the day? Otherwise you are stuck with the tourist buses which only go to a limited number of places. Try to go to Berry's beach- it is magic. You can see penguins at St Kilda for nothing, by the way. Cowes is pretty busy just now with school hols but there are a few quiet and lovely beaches around. In Cowes there is a good Japanese lunch place, next to La Porchettas. Pinos trattoria is good too, opposite but sometimes you have to queue to get a seat.
Marisawright
There are day trips by coach but as others have said, it's a long haul - they leave Melbourne quite early and get back very late at night. Tiring for kids.
