Teaching Qualifications

Hi All,

My wife is a teacher with lots of experience, she has a BaHons teaching degree (includes PGCE), at the time this was a 3 year course specialising in Resistant materials (now migrated into the heading Design & Technology), she currently teaches food (home Economics) and has been head of Dept.

Does anyone know if this is valid as some literature says you must have a 3 year degree PLUS PGCE or a 4 year course including PGCE. Any feedback welcome.

4 years means 4 years so a 3 year degree plus PGCE is ok, a 3 year degree including a PGCE is not. This is one thing they are very clear on.

Many thanks for both replies..... not what i wanted to hear but c'est la vie.

The only other option is a 457 and the associated risks (1. finding a sponsor, 2. possibly not liking the job!!!)

Temporary visas are just that and there is no guarantee of permanence and even if you could get one, your wife still wouldn't be able to teach at all. Also, the dependents of temporary visa holders do struggle to get meaningful jobs as they could have to leave at the drop of a hat.

She cant get sponsorship as a teacher as she cant get registration as a teacher with only 3 years of uni. The registration requirements mimic the immigration requirements.

To be registered as a teacher in Australia, you must have 4 years of fulltime university education, one year of which must be Education based.    All BEd degrees in Australia are 4 years and the Registration Boards around the country will only register someone who meets that minimum qualification.   A 3 year degree can be supplemented by a Masters in Education or a PGCE if the under graduate degree is not teaching based.   Sorry not the news you wanted to hear unfortunately, as in this instance experience doesn't help get you over the line.

If your 3 year degree includes the teaching qualification, then it's unlikely that you can do a PGCE to 'top this up' as you're already qualified, so you would probably be looking at a Masters.

Thanks Richard, In you opinion a Masters would be enough to show the 4 years of study? Although it would have to be completed as a part time course over 2 years. (reflecting 1 full time year of study)

Before making the financial and time commitment we just want to be re-assured in this respect anyway. Taking into account that by the time the masters is finished the rules may have changed....

Masters does qualify her as the additional year, we have had this query on numerous occasions on different threads. This isn't likely to change any time soon either as if anything Australia are looking to raise the standards to qualify as a teacher. AITSL are very strict on this and no teaching board in Australia will allow a teacher with three years university study to be registered to teach.

 

It's a pain but needs to be done I'm afraid!

I understand 4 years is 4 years. I have a BA, QTS through the GTP route in the UK and 17 years of teaching Early Years and Primary experience in the UK and UAE.

I plan on doing a PGCE Secondary full time to get the qualifications side sorted.

Re the experience, it is after my BA and GTP QTS ... does it count? Or will be discounted being pre my PGCE?

Any ideas and help very much appreciated.

I would run that past a migration agent as if you do a secondary pgce you may have to apply as a secondary teacher, in which case they may not recognise any work history.

Just bear in mind that GTP is not a recognised qualification outside of UK and thtat QTS means nothing in Australia.
