Moving to WA - Disability Services Opportunities

Hi guys, I'm moving to Perth in the next weeks and I have been applying for jobs in disability services. i have worked mostly in home support but i would like to work in other services and I am aiming for case management but not restricted to that alone. I have had some response to my applications but as I'm moving from Ireland, I'm hoping that I will get more on arrival. Some people have mentioned that what is expected from applications there differs to what I am used in that, my cover letter is 1 page long and my cv is 3 pages long. I have always kept it reasonably succinct but adapted to the roles that I a applying for. Some people have advised me that cover letters there should be 3-4 pages long to address the requirements listed in the job ads - is that true or dependent on the role that you're applying for? I have a meeting set up with a Disability Employment Service when I arrive and I'm looking for advice on preparing for that also? There seems to be differences in what employers are looking for from employees so I'm not sure what to expect. Appreciate any advice! Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum.

First, you might want to have a look at our sister forum https://www.perthpoms.com/

The first question is what visa are you moving on?

From my experience, if an employer wants you to address everything in a long list, they will state it, otherwise I didn't find it much different to the UK. The main thing is that most employers wont consider you until you are in the country.

Hi verystormy, thanks for that. I suppose it is logical that an application form outside the country wouldn't be considered but I would like to get my preparation in early all the same!

I'm moving on a New Zealand citizen de facto partner visa (461).

Your resume should be short, should be in reverse chronological order and allude very briefly to the skills and achievements demonstrated at each point - the position name doesn't always indicate what you did. Most important is your response to the selection criteria - on average half a page for each selection criterion.. Use the STAR approach to address each one (google it).

Cover letter minimal just saying which position and what you are enclosing to support your application.

You'll probably be behind locally trained and experienced talent (if there is any) in priorities.
