lucy12
Hi I am new to this so please forgive me if this is wrong! I am wanting to move to Australia asap. I have just finished my Business and maths degree and want to become a teacher. However after working part time in a school I really don't want to teach mainstream and want to teach sen .. I have found this relatively new pgce... https://www.shu.ac.uk/study-here/find-a-course/pgce-pgce-post16-and-further-education-special-educational-needs Sen Pgce for further education. Does anyone know if this alone would qualify me as a Sen teacher in Australia? I will meet the 45 days needed as per below but don't know if a pgce with a sen specialism is enough . Many thanks L
Richard Gregan
As long as you have a minimum of 4 years of university education, which includes a minimum of one year SEN teaching education with minimum 45 days+ placement experience in a school setting with SEN students, then you'll meet the requirements. If you are a (born) UK citizen you won't need IELTS. Regards, Richard Edited May 26, 2017 by Richard Gregan
Richard Gregan
Specific guidance from AITSL: Professional The professional criterion must be met in one of two ways: (i) an initial teacher education qualification of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting, and a formal post graduate qualification in special education of at least one year in duration (full-time or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level. NOTE - Applicants relying on a postgraduate special education qualification to, in-part, meet the professional criterion must have completed a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice in a school setting as part of their initial teacher education qualification to meet the professional assessment criteria. or (ii) an undergraduate initial teacher education qualification with a specialisation in special education of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent), at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students within a special education setting. The professional qualification/s must be assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher.
Sammy1
I have noticed that the course you have detailed is only for post 16 education and further education. That severely limits possibilities.
Richard Gregan
I should correct the language requirements. Current requirements state that an applicant who has completed at least four full years of study in higher education (university) in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America is exempt. This study must have resulted in award of qualification(s) comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher and must include a recognised initial teacher education qualification. This is the problem I have. Is it SEN teachers needed just in a school setting or FE too
Richard Gregan
Well, once again, this is what AITSL have to say: Professional The professional criterion must be met in one of two ways: (i) an initial teacher education qualification of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting, and a formal post graduate qualification in special education of at least one year in duration (full-time or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level. benj1980
The issue would be gaining employment when registering with a teaching board. I'm not aware of this being acceptable to teach in a high school age setting.

I have spoken to another migration agent who has said this does not meat the criteria as AITSL states the SEN course must be in addition to the PGCE - she said: the checklist makes it clear that the Initial Teacher Qualification and the Special Needs Qualification are separate “ items” that need to be ticked, The requirement is for an Initial Teacher Qualification (minimum one year) PLUS a minimum one year SEN qualification.' Please can you shed some light on this, it's really hard getting different answers from different sources.
