Applying for baby citizenship in Aus

Hi all, I've a query that I'm hoping someone may be able to help with.

My Australian girlfriend is pregnant and we are planning to get the de facto spousal visa and move out to Melbourne after the baby is born (did have 457 lined up but that has fallen through due to the reg changes...) She was in the Aus embassy the other day getting a new passport and was advised that if the baby is born here it will take about 3 months to get citizenship and we won't be able to go to move out to Australia until this is in place. This won't quite work time wise with our intention of being out there for Christmas, so the query is can we take baby out to Aus and apply for citizenship whilst there?

Thankyou in advance for your help.

The baby will need either citizenship and an Australian passport or a British passport and a visa.  Probably cheaper and quicker to get the Australian citizenship and passport to start with.

Thanks for this, we understand it to be the case that it will be quicker to get the citizenship first, but if it takes 3 months after the birth then it will take us past Christmas which is when we were hoping to get out there.

If the baby were born in Australia s/he would be a citizen by birth.

Thanks wrussell, this was the original intention to get out there before but unfortunately a 457 that was planned has fallen through so we will have to go for spousal visa, which we understand will take a minimum of 6 months so we will be having the baby in UK.

Thank you both for your responses.

I don't know what the wait time is. When our son was born hubby got the citizenship forms, filled them out, mailed them off and we got back the citizenship by descent certificate within a couple of weeks. Then he called the Aus High Commission in London to make an in person appointment for our son's first passport. Did that a week or so later and passport was back soon after. All up it was about 5-6 weeks from start to finish.

I also don't understand wait time. We applied online via our immi account for citizen by decent for our child and we received certificate about two weeks later. Bear in mind you need to have the following documents listed here which can take a little bit of time to find/certify/upload etc. http://www.border.gov.au/Trav/Citi/pathways-processes/application-options/descent/documents

Agree with Snifter above - make an appointment with Australia High Commission as soon as you can http://uk.embassy.gov.au/lhlh/PptsApply.html (up to 4 weeks from the day you book it) - you have the citizenship certificate beforehand of course).

Otherwise baby will need British passport and visa which technically, as they are an Australian by decent they shouldn't really have (visa that is).

The way things are shaping up with 457, that might haver been a fortunate development.

Best of luck.
