chloe_zara Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Hey Was wondering what everyone did when they arrived in OZ about getting a car. Did you get a used car straight away? Where did you look? Or did you wait and get a decent car either by loan or on finance? If you get one on finance, what's the criteria to qualify? Do you need a credit score history? Cars seem to be very pricey, with very high mileage as I rarely drive here in London easier to get the bus to work then sit in lots of traffic and have no parking [emoji20] How about car insurance, is there no claims discounts etc how different is insurance from the UK? Thanks in advance Sent using Poms in Oz mobile app
andy.s. Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 hi, we bought two used cars upon arrival, both for about $10,000 each, no issues with them. We bought them from a dealer in Melbourne- saw them on carsales.com.au first. Generally used cars are more expensive than in UK but new ones are cheaper! We managed to get an SX4 and an i30, both 2010 models- this was in mid 2015, with about 55,000km on the clock each. Always check that the rego is not due also as this will set you back $700 or so. We are happy with the cars and we did insist on a 1 year warranty for free from the dealer. Remember you have no part ex so cash is king! Youi were really good for insurance for us as expats with no claims bonus etc.

Guest The Pom Queen Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 Rego is like car tax. You also need to make sure it has a road worthy certificate or safety certificate (different states use different names) this is equivalent to MOT. We hired a car when we first arrived for 2 weeks this allowed us to drive around a few car sales yards. Insurance, yes your NCB will qualify here, just make sure you get a certificate stating that you have one before you leave. Car finance, there are companies out there that do lend to new arrivals but they usually require a higher deposit and you pay a higher interest rate
