Stewjc Posted May 2, 2017 Posted May 2, 2017 My boss has just told me that he wants to give me a pay cut for whatever reason-I'm not sure if it's legal but my question is-What is the minimum a person on a 457 visa can get paid? Sent using Poms in Oz mobile app

Collie Posted May 3, 2017 Posted May 3, 2017 It's not legal unless you agree to it. You have a contract right? Your t&cs including salary are contained within your contract. Any changes to it need to be agreed by both parties and a new contract agreed. But, then there is also being practical about it. As you are on a 457, he has you by the short & curlies as you can't just get up and move to a new employer without additional hassle. If you refuse the reduction, he could just manage you out in time. I don't think that it is unreasonable to have a polite meeting about the issue; Ask for details on why your salary is being reduced, is business down or is the business struggling? Is it for a temporary period of time etc? I wouldn't just take it without understanding the logic behind it. But plan a meeting about it to understand the boss's position and keep it civil. Plan it for the end of a day. Longer term, look for a way to get your PR so that you will have options in the future. There may be a deal to be done here - you take less money but they agree to sponsor you for PR. Or you could ask for more time off in lieu of the reduced salary etc. (say a 4 day week or additional holidays during a quiet time - Xmas etc), that might work fo him too. You need to look after yourself. EIther way, unless a deal is worked out to the satisfaction of both parties, your working relationship is going to change. Either he imposes the paycut, you suck it up but will feel disgruntled and less motivated at work, Or you fight the paycut and the employer is pissed off and looks for a way to manage you out which leaves you stuffed in Australia. Whatever happens, look for a way to get your PR so you will options in a similar situation in the future.
Stewjc Posted May 3, 2017 Author Posted May 3, 2017 Thanks very much for this-much appreciated. He has said I have too much on my plate and I'm not coping so he has to spread my work. There is also a possible funding cut coming so this takes pressure off possible redundancy. It's just getting too much to be honest and I'm looking elsewhere. Thanks again Sent from my iPhone using PomsinOz
