Just thi kibg it might be easier to open a bank account here and transfer it to oz? Or i might be able to take my credit card with me by transferring it? Cheers Sent from my LG-H850 using Tapatalk
DukeNinja Posted April 13, 2017 Posted April 13, 2017 Hi. I have sort of looked into this, and the only bank that has an international presence and wide network in the UK and Australia is HSBC. Apparently you can apply for an international account after having had your UK account for 6 months, and there are no transfer fees.
Guest Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 Opening an Aus bank account while in the UK is pretty simple. We opened one with Commonwealth and simply transferred money into it and went in and activated it in person when we arrived. Got debit cards and so on also. No hassle, no dramas
Cerberus1 Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 You can open a nab account up to 12 months before you move to Aus - https://www.nationalaustraliabank.com/nabglobal/en/banking/migrant-banking
Guest The Pom Queen Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 I have heard so many horror stories about members opening accounts with HSBC including one member where the HSBC had lost all there money from the house sale between transferring it from the U.K. To here which left them with no money for 3 weeks whilst it was sorted. It proved difficult as well because they only had one bank and that was in Melbourne city.
ScottieGirl Posted April 14, 2017 Posted April 14, 2017 Westpac also allow you to open an account from the UK. There are so many ex pats in Aus the banks are well set up to accommodate them. In the 15 years I was there my Australians bank was always more technically advanced than my UK one.
SUPERSTARDJ01 Posted April 15, 2017 Author Posted April 15, 2017 I have a barclays visa do barclays have a presence in oz? If so i maybe able to take it with me and if not ill have to settle up before hand.Sent from my LG-H850 using Tapatalk
SUPERSTARDJ01 Posted April 16, 2017 Author Posted April 16, 2017 I found this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banks_in_Australia under branches of foreign banks it lists barclays capital, hbos & hsbc im guessing this means most uk banks are in australia as hbos owns halifax lloyds & bank of scotland, but if im right thw banks etc are just subsidiary which would mean i wouldnt be able to take my halifax account unless halifax itself is in australia????
Guest Posted April 16, 2017 Posted April 16, 2017 It's easier to just open an Aus bank account from the UK and then activate it once in Aus. If you leave the UK your Halifax will probably close your account. It's not worth the hassle of chasing all this when it's so easy and straightforward to open an aus account with any number of Aus banks and then transfer funds using a forex with a good rate and no fees.

They are usually corporate offices with no retail branches.
Guest The Pom Queen Posted April 16, 2017 Posted April 16, 2017 Even if they did have an Australian branch unfortunately you would still need to open a new account, so it's probably easier just to open a new one.
