I flew air Canada and they are prohibited in checked baggage. They were required to be hand luggage. I had several batteries including two pretty large hilti batteries. Your airline may differ however.

I have just travelled with an electric mobility scooter it had 2 x 20ah lead acid batteries. I had the option of carrying them in cabin baggage (They are too heavy) or detaching it from the scooter and checking it in.
