How can you top up a nursing diploma so that you can register withAHPRA

Hi, I am a diploma qualified nurse and am trying to find info on how to commute my diploma to the required qualifications in Australia. Is there anything I can do from here (save for doing the modules to get my degree).

Thanks in advance,

Steph

Hi,

Please do not quote me on this route, however from what I have gleaned from other people it is possible to register with AHPRA if you have a diploma - however only if you do so first via NZ. So, register with NZ nursing council - then through the Trans - Tasman agreement you are then eligible with Aus/AHPRA.

I am a degree trained MH nurse, so went the direct route so i have not completed this route. Lots of people have used this approach though. If you have not done so - join this group on Facebook:

Good Luck!

I may be wrong, some of members on the forum who've been through this will no better, but if you don't have a degree, isn't the only other possibility doing the bridging program (which I believe costs around $12,500?)

http://www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au/Codes-Guidelines-Statements/FAQ/FAQ-IQNM-bridging-program.aspx

There's lots of threads on the forum about this if you do a search:

I am currently registering with NCNZ to aim to try and transfer my reg to Oz under the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition (TTMR) scheme. It sounds complicated but it's no more so than the traditional Australian route. The fb group Uk Nurses wanting APHRA and Anmac ... is brilliant for this . There are a few of us on there doing it this way, and others who have done it already. This forum is great for everything else. It's all above board, it's just a loophole, nz makes money from your reg, oz gets good experienced nurses, but who don't have degrees without having to do any leg work to trawl through your paperwork to see if you are equivalent trained to their degree nurses. From what I understand that's why they stopped diploma nurses coming, they just didn't have the time to verify all of these varying qualifications against their degree standards, but if nz want to do it for them that's up to them in a nutshell.

Hi, I have been granted NCNZ registration with a Dip HE in Child Nursing and an just transferring it over now to Aus. The two countries have a reciprocal agreement that nurses registered in one country can practice in the other with very little extra evidence (and a fee of course). I must add that I have sent out about two inch thick wodge of documents to justify my training and my CPD, but although it was time consuming to gather, it wasn't any harder than gathering stuff for AHPRA directly.

I know there are a few people who have topped up and still not been accepted by AHPRA directly but have been successful via NZ. Join the FB group I mentioned in my last post for loads of info. NCNZ official line is that they only accept degrees but they will consider all applications on a case by case basis.

You do need IELTS English test first though too before you can apply so crack on and book that in as it can take a few weeks to get a date and 2 weeks to get your results! You can always use the results towards extra visa points too if you are wanting PR.

Thanks for that. Are there any General nurses who have registered with NZ, so I can eliminate the fact that you are a specialist nurse, as you're treated differently even by ahpra.

i followed that link for Facebook but it says expired.

Its not to do with being a specialist nurse, its called the Trans-Tasman agreement and applies to nurses registered in NZ. They can transfer their registration from the NZ register to AHPRA. Go on the AHPRA site and lok for trans-tasman, the details are there.

Nurses of all areas have been successful with the NZ route but sadly it is not applicable to UK midwives as they are governed by a different body to nurses in NZ. The Fb group was recently renamed to Uk registered nurses seeking Anmac and AHPRA or similar to that. You will see many examples of people who have done if or are doing it.

As a Diploma Paeds nurse AHPRA would never have considered me, even for bridging, but under the TTMR if NZ have registered me and I can show a COGS from both nz and Uk, plus a few other documents I already had gathered for the NZ registration then legally they have no reason to decline me.

would the appropriate steps be as follows:

1. Take English test

2 register with NZ

3 register with AHPRA through TTMR

4 put forward EOI

5 await invitation

what evidence am I likely to need for registration with NZ?

You need to check with the New Zealand nursing registration body.

Yes you do steps 1 and 2, then you can AHPRA anytime you like before you come out.

Step 3 is apply for Modified ANMAC skills assessment (not full assessment)
Prior to step 4 and 5.

Google "NCNZ internationally qualified nurses" and you will find all the guidelines and application forms on there. You can start to gather your documents listed while you wait for your English exam. Fb group uk registered nurses seeking Ahpra and Anmac (or something like that) is the only place I have found with lots of info on Nz route. Though here is much better for general migration help and support.

No they don't care about schooling at all, you have to do either IELTS or OET (I think) first. They ask for your exam number on one of the first pages of the NCNZ online application- you can't move onto the next page without it unfortunately.

But the positive is that it gets it out the way when things are less stressful in the beginning, and you can re-use your IELTS results for points towards your 189 application when life is much more stressful. Feel free to message if can help along the way
