Suzukiscottie 759 Posted December 30, 2016 (edited) What a year he's had. Andy also gets a Knighthood in the New Years honours list. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-38467970 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Edited December 30, 2016 by Suzukiscottie From Kilmarnock, now in Melbourne :-)
Perthbum 5,725 Posted December 30, 2016 knighthoods mean nothing these days. Drinking rum before 11am does not make you an alcoholic, it makes you pirate..
flag of convenience 3,987 Posted December 31, 2016 I agree. He done well for himself, the onus on himself, but why a knighthood for personal success?
AJ 1,874 Posted December 31, 2016 Really? obviously they were finding it hard to fill the quota!

Rallyman 4,104 Posted December 31, 2016 I agree. He done well for himself, the onus on himself, but why a knighthood for personal success? Have a read up on what he went through when he was younger , when he wins he always looks up and points to the sky.
Ferrets 439 Posted December 31, 2016 I agree. He done well for himself, the onus on himself, but why a knighthood for personal success? Really? Could have sworn that the Davis Cup Team was pretty special last year and Andy Murray had sacrificed some of his individual opportunities to focus on that. Parley 7,918 Posted December 31, 2016 Well at least he's not a drug taking pop singer. Elton John got one didn't he? I thought It used to be that someone had to do significant charity work to get a knighthood not just excel at their profession. But that rule seems to have gone by the wayside. Since the London Olympics all the successful sportspeople get one so why not Andy ? Buy a man eat fish. The Day, Teach Man, to lifetime. - Joe Biden.
Bungo 45 Posted December 31, 2016 I think it is ridiculous that somebody gets a knighthood for playing tennis (or any other sport) for mainly personal gain and satisfaction.

You really think that is self sacrifice enough to warrant a knighthood? Amazing.

Very true. Not only ridiculous but denigrates in my opinion the meaning of knighthood. For goodness sake lets move on from self serving celeb culture.

flag of convenience 3,987 Posted December 31, 2016 Have a read up on what he went through when he was younger , when he wins he always looks up and points to the sky. And? Many folk go through trials and tribulations without reward or honour. More likely a kick in the guts and told there are others far worse off.
Ferrets 439 Posted December 31, 2016 (edited) You really think that is self sacrifice enough to warrant a knighthood? Amazing. Well it depends on your POV. I have enjoyed his contribution to British sport tremendously, as have a significant number of people. I'd be more concerned at other on the lists....Steve Webb, Lib Dem Pensions Minister being Knighted...for what?? Edited December 31, 2016 by Ferrets

Actually to the point of scrapping this political and influential nonsense.
newjez 10,751 Posted December 31, 2016 I don't have a problem with people getting it for excelling at sport. It's a knighthood, not a sainthood. Far worse have got one. As for charity, just because he doesn't make a song and dance about it https://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/andy-murray Nearly there! Don't drop the ball now guys! Vaccines are weeks away. Get over yourself for once , he did not ask for it , you obviously have no idea , he was one of the few that survived the dunblane shootings and as I said he always remembers them. i don't agree with a lot of the honours list but in this instance I have no problem , as I said get over yourself for once

As for charity, just because he doesn't make a song and dance about it https://www.looktothestars.org/celebrity/andy-murray Well I have supported more charities than he has according to that list. And so he played a couple of games of tennis in order to get other people to make donations. It is like me working on a spreadsheet and asking people to donate, not that impressive. I don't like honours going to people for excelling at sport or otherwise being a celebrity. It makes a mockery of the system and this is not limited to Andy Murray, there are examples of celebrities and sports people receiving these honours every year, it would be nice to see unglamorous, not famous people working hard for others being honoured instead. Diane 507 Posted January 1, 2017 (edited) Why not David Beckham who has done a lot more for people and charities I think he already has one - and his wife Victoria got some honour this year for services to fashion. About time Robbie Williams got something though. Oh, and some guy who put David Cameron and his wife up when they moved out of No. 10 got something - that's just tacky imho Edited January 1, 2017 by Diane
Petals 4,259 Posted January 1, 2017 They seem to hand them out with the corn flakes these days. Once they were for people who made a difference, like medical research that changed the lives of millions, now its pop singers and tennis stars. Sorry but they do not rate in my book. All the celeb nonsense, royal nonsence and that is what its become these days. No honour anymore Petals :ssign15:taking no prisoners
flag of convenience 3,987 Posted January 1, 2017 Yes fully agree with the above. They should be for endeavours above and beyond the making of fame and/or money. Something of benefit to the human condition. That can come in different ways but preferably not self serving or self aggrandisement.
