Most houses are bought by people to live in

600,000 empty in the UK. 90,000 empty just in Sydney.

What I said is still true.

I can speak for Melbourne but the same is true in Sydney.

 

This does happen with inner city apartments but not very much houses out in the suburbs where most people live.

Houses where I live are bought by families who live in them.

 

I doubt whether applying a tax would make much difference anyway.

The ultra wealthy who are parking money won't care.

 

Measures have been introduced already to try and cool the Sydney and Melbourne housing mark but they are still going up.

Still going up fuelled by speculation. Sydney and increasingly Melbourne out of reach of local punters. Vested interests rule. Government in bed with real estate lobby and little interest in normal Australians. A recipe for disaster? Or will Australians continue to take it? How this nation has changed. Recent measures of controlling foreign speculation band aid at best. Enormous problems looming.

the tax, if equal to the cost of a rental, could be used to fund the building of a property which could be rented.
