My partner is a type 1 diabetic and we need to book our medicals. We want to make it as straightforward as possible so can anyone advise if there are any additional documents he will need to take to the medical with him? He's only just recently had a hba1c blood test which came back 8.9 for him this is good as his GP in the U.K. Told him to aim to keep it under 10 however we've been told by a pharmacist over here that 8.9 is high and he should be aiming between 6-7. Petals Posted December 14, 2016 Share Posted December 14, 2016 My daughter is type 1 and born here so no migration problems. They do like them to keep it under 8, doubt she does though. I think you will be fine. However he will need letters from his doctor etc and need to register with a doctor straight away so that he can be registered as a type 1 diabetic. This enables him to get cheap pens and blood testing equipment cheaper. He will have to pay for his prescriptions but they usually give a six month supply of insulin on each prescription. Check on the pharmaceutical benefits list to see that the type of insulin being used is available here on the PBS. Anything not on the PBS has to be paid for in full. My daughter goes to an endocrinologist who looks after her, the fee is about $150 a visit but he gets some back on medicare. His first hba1c readying was 8 and that was back in February his most recent one is 8.9 so hopefully that will still be ok. Ken Posted December 14, 2016 Share Posted December 14, 2016 (edited) 8.9 is high but it takes a while to get the insulin dose correct (and thereafter you're always fine tuning it). I've had diabetes for over 25 years so I can tell you not to worry about an 8.9 to begin with - but for the long term you'll want to bring that down. Don't be surprised if it goes back up again at some point - as I said you're always fine tuning it. And don't worry about the visa either. Diabetes (type 1 anyway I don't have experience of type 2) doesn't prevent people getting a visa. PS: Don't believe anyone who tells you your Hba1c should be below 7. Bring along any copies of previous blood tests and any eye tests he will have had done in the past - As long as he can demonstrate good glycaemic control and the absence of diabetic organ disease then he should be fine. Fingers crossed this goes smoothly as it's been such a stressful few months. Nomination was approved today and only document they requested for the visa was the medicals so just this one last hurdle to get over!
