Hi I have just recently come over to Brisbane with my new husband on a visitor visa but he has been offered a good job and we want to stay and lodge a partner visa app.

I need to get a police check from the UK but they need two proofs of address, obviously I can't get them for here as well I haven't been living here long and don't qualify for Medicare or anything I could get proof of address for.!

I really dont know what to do! Anyone any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated right now :(

Thanks in advance

I don't recall you have to submit this or your medical when you lodge your application as they are only valid for a year and on shore processing times are running at 14 months plus atm iirc. So you have time to plan and get it sorted, even if you apply for it later on I would think.

If you came over on a tourist visa do you not still have your UK address you can use? As in its still your place of residence and you are on holiday in Aus atm but you've decided to stay? If so, I can't see why you cannot use that if its still your home IYKWIM and you are only on holiday in Aus atm.

I can't recall what others have done in this sort of situation. Maybe someone who has had this issue will see this and be able to help.

If not I suggest you email them to ask what you should do in this instance. They may be able to guide you.

If you are having difficulty in completing this application, please contact ACRO Customer Serviceson +44(0) 2380 479920 (telephone lines are open 08:30-23:00 UK Monday to Friday) or via emailto customer.services@acro.pnn.police.uk

Thanks for the reply snifter.

Yes I was thinking about using the UK address but I haven't lived in the UK for 2 and a half years. I've come over to Aus from Canada.

Ok I was under the impression all checks had to be submitted at time of application?

Police checks and medicals only last for a year so submitting them later is a good idea so they don't expire. The CO should give you an idea when they should be done. Were you in Canada for over 12 months? their checks can take longer than the UK if i recall correctly.

I'd not panic then. I'd apply for the visa and then when the bridging visa kicks in it should come with work rights etc and so you can then get the official address stuff you need for the ACPO check later on in the process. You are not going to need to submit it when lodging so don't fret about including them when you lodge.

As has been said, the Canadian police check may take longer so I'd be more concerned about checking the timeframe on that and when best to apply.

We had a similar problem when we came to the UK about 10 years back. We called and explained our situation and ended giving our previous overseas address.

I recommend just calling in person and explaining, they accepted anything we had and ended up submitting our NI submission letter. Isn't there any official letter you can get?

Usually, a quick call to HMRC for your latest tax payments will help, even if you havent paid anything they send something. You could also call the last council you stayed at to send a letter saying you dont owe any pending taxes, and that will count too.

Just give them a local UK address, letters arrive in 4 days or so, and your family can scan it across. Hope this helps!
