So Brexit now needs parliamentary approval?

I'm wondering why they bothered to have a referendum in the first place

It was because David Cameron wanted to put it all to bed, not expecting that leaving the EU would win.

However since the referendum we've had the situation that the losers have tried their hardest to overturn the vote, but if it does get changed because of a legal technicality, I'm sure there will be a big furore. So can we now try to overturn everything we don't like, including sporting results? It would appear that democracy in the UK is dying.

The media ...washington ...wall st ...its running parallel to the brexit vote ....

Frighteningly similar ....the system in the u.s is worried to death ,because he is going to rock their world if he is elected...." He's going to "drain the swamp " as he calls it .

God, what a lot of bloody whingers. Calm down for god's sake. We voted to leave the EU, and that's all we voted for and that's what we are doing. We didn't vote to trash the economy. We didn't vote to appease the far right. We voted to return democracy to the UK, and that is what we are doing. Parliament is our democracy, and parliament are going to decide how we leave the EU. Parliament answer to us, and we will ensure they leave responsibly.

Bloody whingers.

Brexiters? Brickshitters more like. Put your handbags away and be positive about the future.

I'm in seventh heaven.

Precisely.

Nowhere in the referendum was there a question about ending Parliamentary democracy and handing over all power to an appointed Prime Minister. If ever there was a time for parliamentary oversight it is now rather than these shady deals behind closed doors (Nissan for example).

Democracy is under threat alright but it being threatened by those who feel that a referendum on a single question should lead to the abrogation of Parliament.

The power was given to the people of Britain in the form of a vote in June, remoaners should not believe that their moves to overturn democracy is the way we should conduct ourselves.

So MP's are going to vote on it , So what happens if it's a no ? as 99% thought

that it would never be a leave vote that came out on top n the first place.

So you agree the UK MUST leave the EU after the democratic vote to leave and it must not be held up for years by the sad whining bastards who cannot except the will of the people.

You are mistaken. The power was not given to the people of Britain in June. What was given in June was the chance for the people of Britain to say whether or not they wished to stay in the E.U.

Since then, Teresa May has been unforthcoming about her plans and has attempted to shut the elected government of this country out of decisions and negotiations surrounding our withdrawal. This secretive and unhelpful behaviour has been challenged, the claim being made that Parliament is entitled to a say in when and how our withdrawal takes place.

The challenge to Teresa May's right to exclude parliament from the decision to activate article 50 has been upheld in the high court. This is democracy in action, and the government appeal against the high court decision is also democracy in action. It has nothing to do with ordinary people wishing to overturn democracy, everything to do with ordinary people using their democratic rights.

By the way, the term "remoaners" is ridiculous - we're not five.

they have reinforced democracy. They were trying to use a surrogate monarchy. Sorry mate, but that ended with the civil war. We are a democracy, and the law is an essential part of that democracy.

And when the government win their appeal as most experts say they will, that is democracy....the people voted to leave... no ifs...no buts...

the people have made their will plain. We will leave the EU. Parliament will determine how. Stop panicking and have some faith in the people elected to govern this country.

leaving the EU is a process. It will take as long as it takes, and it will evolve as it needs to evolve. This may end with us being in the single market, or may progress to something else. Be positive. The grown ups have taken charge.

if they do, then so be it. In actual fact, I don't think today changes anything. We were heading there anyway. This is just a rubber stamp.

We all know that the majority of 650 MPs do not support Brexit and are going to block Article 50. They are supposed to be there to represent the people not tell us what to do. The majority of the electorate of the UK told parliament what we wanted to do in June and 650 people out of 33 million are going to ignore that and do differently.

It it is a shameful day for democracy in the UK.

No matter what you (general you) voted, we should all be outraged by this turn of events.

I am not in the slightest outraged.

I do not think in any way that this will stop the UK leaving the EU (which was voted for by a majority in an advisory, non-binding referendum).

What this will do is ensure alignment by Parliament on what the UK is asking for before pressing the button. For instance the referendum didn't represent a choice on trade, immigration, etc.

Suspect that an inability to secure that alignment will lead to an early election, and a thumping Conservative majority on a mandate of a hard Brexit is a significant possibility. At that point the bill to proceed with article 50 will skip through Parliament.

Whether I agree or not with the decision that would be democratic, certainly more so than the "no plan" shambles that is unfolding.
