Becoming a teacher in Australia?!

Hi,

My family currently live in Sydney and I am due to move out there with my boyfriend next year. Me and my family have recently got permanent residency, however my boyfriend will come over on a working visa while we save to apply for a partner visa.

My issue is that my boyfriend will complete his university course next year and wants to become a teacher. We don't want to stay in England longer than necessary so he wants to complete the equivalent of the PGCE over there however the cost of this is 20000AUD with no help from student finance or anything so isn't an option.

Are there any other ways to gain the teaching qualification over there without spending thousands of pounds, or at least getting a student loan for the fees? In the UK you can go through the school direct and get paid for teaching whilst gaining the qualification, is this a thing done in Australia?

Thank you,

Charlotte

.

No such paid teaching option exists here. He would be classed as an international student and would be charged as an international student until he received PR. Only citizens are eligible for student loan help here from the government.

Your boyfriend is really is much better off doing a PGCE in the UK.

Just be aware that schools direct is not accepted here at all, so his PGCE must be university based.

I recommend that he looks at doing it in a demand subject as there is an oversupply of teachers in the primary area here.

Actually, the paid to teach option is available in oz and it is exactly the same scheme as the UK. In oz it is called Teach for Australia. However, he would need to be a permanent resident to apply and he is, from what you have posted at least 2.5 years away from that (12 months of living together before he can apply then processing is about 18 months).

Also, they generally only want maths and science grads with at least a 2:1 and is not easy to get on. I did it and was successful in my application, but had to turn it down.

He is probably going to be better doing a UK pgce. Though he needs to be aware not all teaching is in demand in oz by any means.

Ugh, Teach for Australia. I really do feel sorry for students. The graduates who qualify this way are unlikely to last the distance, at the moment just under 53%

I answered with regards to the OP's boyfriend and as such, no option like that exists for him.

Yes, he should definitely do the PGCE in the UK.

No real alternative to doing a Uni based PGCE in UK really. Definitely not the on the job training PGCE. Unless he is secondary maths and science he might want to have a total career rethink - teaching in NSW isn't easy to get into.

AITSL has changed its stance on SCITT's and other paths into teaching (I am a beneficiary of the change in stance!) Schools direct can be accepted providing the usual criteria is met through AITSL. They aren't accepted if the teacher training don't...

Initial teacher education programs that do not result in the issue of a formal academic award, final academic transcript and a statement of supervised teaching practice issued by an accredited higher education institution will not be considered in the assessment process.

The GTP with Qualified Teacher Status enables a graduate to work in a secondary school in England or Wales. It does not enable an applicant to work as a qualified teacher in most other European Union countries and is not recognised in Australia for the purpose of migration or teacher registration.

You really need to do your homework on this or go through the university route.
