Gatton Queensland

One of my best friends is from there ,her parents and sisters still live there. It has grown a lot this last few years but is still only a small place and a bit of trek to Brisbane. (although for city shops etc you would probably go to Ipswich not Brisbane). For a quiet country life and for someone not needing regular access to a city it would be ideal IMO.

In Australian terms it is not isolated. Its less than 1/2 hour to Toowoomba which has most things you would need. And there is large branch of the university of Queensland just outside of the town. If you want small town living but close to larger cities than that is what you'll find in Gatton.

Thanks all, it's hard as we want rural no neighbors as we have dogs but need to be near the best specialists and surgeons and we don't have a high budget. I don't want one of the acreage blocks that is on an estate as for us it would be too close to neighbors with the dogs. Also I would probably get back to being registered as a wildlife shelter.

Have you had a look around Lowood and the little suburbs out that way? They are not as far as Gatton, all very country-ish villages, have lots of acreage not on estates (although a few new acerage estates have popped up this last few years) and are not a million miles from the bigger hospitals like PA , Greenslopes etc as your not far from the highway. I know they come under the Ipswich 'tag' but they are miles apart from Ipswich inner city suburbs.

A few examples i found - http://www.realestate.com.au/property-acreage+semi+rural-qld-lowood-120062177

Well then Gatton might well be a good match for you - but as Cal says, Lowood, Fernvale, Rosewood, Marburg might all be other options. Quite a few places like that around the area. Also, lots of places between Gatton and Wawick, that starts moving out a little further from main treatment centres though.

Yes, Boonah isn't a bad option to check out. Nice community feel there, and roads to Brisbane are good - you'd want to avoid driving at rush hour, but then a lot of places will be like that. Its quite nicely accessible for places like the PA hospital - one of the public big ones in Brisbane.

Err, if you needed a very big, heavy cardigan in the Northern Territory in September...What the fairy floss will you need to keep you warm in winter in the sarf east of Qld?? Hmmm??

Cheers, Bobj.

@Bobj now this is very true. I'm not sure how I will go. I still want to go back to Cairns but it's the hospitals that's the issue.

Well we had a look at a few properties today around Gatton before my operation tomorrow. We saw two we liked our favourite was in Laidley South but then there is an ex greyhound property where the house needs a bit of work but the kennels would be perfect for what we want. If I knew we could def have a permit for extra dogs on the Laidley one I would jump for that straight away.

We also drove through Esk which I liked. It's funny as there seems so much for here compared to Townsville. Driving back to Greenslopes though seemed stressful I'm not use to city traffic.

Make sure you check the flood maps for Gatton and Laidley. Remember also the Toowoomba by pass has been approved so that will take a fair few truck off the current road system.

Hi Tina, glad you said that as we checked and although the house we looked at isn't in the flood zone and wasn't under water after the 2013 floods we found photos of the floods in Laidley and it was quite a significant event.

Regency Downs, Plain Lands, and Gatton are other areas to check for floods. Further north Murphy's Creek is another flood area. There are lovely homes close to those areas that are no in the flood zone its just a case of checking.

Hi, Toowoomba has a Base Hospital but you still might have to go to Brisbane for some surgeries. Gatton isn't too bad, you might have more luck finding a bigger rural property away from neighbors on the outskirts of Toowoomba. Warwick is similar to Gatton but still 2 hours to Brisbane Hospital and an Hour to Toowoomba hospital. Most rural towns have a hospital but unless they are a Base Hospital like Toowoomba the rural hospitals don't have many services. You could also look for a larger property between Ipswich (which has a Base Hospital) and Toowoomba. Ipswich is a huge suburban city of its own.  There's also Warwick which has larger rural properties & is 2 hours from Brisbane and 1 hour from Toowoomba. Warwick has everything, Big W, Coles, shops, etc and gets a lot more rain & is therefore greener, I better warn you though that anywhere West of Brisbane gets very very hot. Make sure you have aircon!!!!!

Just spent my second week in Toowoomba Base and I can tell you the nursing staff are amazing goodness only knows how they cope, the hospital was never built to cope with the population explosion it is now seeing. wards ( unless you have private health insurance when it is a very different story as Toowoomba has 2 private hospitals) have 6 beds with mixed ages and genders. Staff are run off there feet trying to cope, food words can not describe, 1 shower and 1 toilet per ward is totally inadiquit .

Look around Laidley , even Grandchester,  both closer to Ipswich which has a good hospital, just check the flood map, some areas flood , and yes be very aware of the heat 40c plus happens a lot during summer.
