Richard01
Hope somebody can help We've just realised that we may need to take our 7 year old out of UK school early, and then be in temp accommodation (hol let) for maybe 8 weeks in Oz before we move into our long-term rental Anyone know where we stand regarding the law and potentially not having him in education for several weeks? Thanks in advance!
Guest The Pom Queen
When we first moved over we had ours out of school for 3 months in total without any problems at all. So you should be absolutely fine.
Quoll
No one in Aus will give a toss whether he's in school or not. While you are in the process of getting stable it's better for him not to be choofed from pillar to post.
lp77
We started kids off at start of term but we changed accommodation every 1-3weeks... Felt like forever but was only 6weeks in total (stayed with in laws for some and at weekends to save $$) arrived 7th jan kids started school 27th jam. We got rental 29th Feb but stuff didn't arrive till 11th March... We moved in weekend of 5th March and borrows from in laws. Bought mugs glasses outdoor table and bean bags... Survived but so nice to have our own stuff now. UK wise school no problem as emigrating. In Oz seems v relaxed at the moment lots of kids take time off for holidays/to watch surf competitions... VERYSTORMY
If you are going to Perth, there are a huge number of rentals available. You wont need 8 weeks to find a long term place - heck, we arrived in Perth in the middle of the boom when rentals were hard to get and still only had two weeks of short term accommodation. Walk into any of the agents in Perth these days and they will be all over you once you say you are looking for a place. The figure I read was there were 17,000 empty houses in WA
calNgary
When we moved , my son finished school in October and started here the following January. It is quite common for kids to miss a bit of school whilst migrating, finding an area etc Cal x
Guest
Yes, no problem but as VS said getting accommodation in Perth will be no problem either, the turnaround is much quicker than the UK - if you see a house on a Monday, they'll be expecting you to move in at the weekend. We ended up paying for 6 weeks holiday rental we didn't need and that was when property was harder to find 20-30 people after each rental. Pommy Jimbo
They are starting to get much more strict about taking holidays during term time... but if you're migrating I would think that's a pretty good reason to miss a bit of school.
starlight7
My daughter's family quite regularly take off for 3 month stints overseas because of my SILs job. The only comments from their schools so far have been to the effect that they will learn more living in a different country than they ever would in school! Thy are very relaxed about things like that here.
Ken
It can be quite difficult to get kids into a school if you only have temporary accommodation. It obviously depends on demand at the particular school but many are full or almost full and so will only allow you to enrol your child if you can prove you live in their zone - for which they'll want to see a long term lease if you're renting.
