Perth Boom Fades, Not High Prices

http://www.perthandtatts.com.au/retropubmeals.php try this link to meals in perth, maybe not fine dining but similar to Tassie

I am well aware of a few special deals around. Mainly pubs with limited menus. Not the norm nor particularly desirable. But still good to know. In general to eat out in Perth, with alcohol is considerably more expensive than Rome and much more than Malta, where I was some fourteen months back. No real reason for this that I can see.

Instead of attempting to undermine, the pointing out of the reality of Rip Off Perth on a world stage, I'd have thought an agreement in to how obscene prices are would not have been difficult reach. No wonder the prices are what they are.

You have to remember with FOC, that if we cure cancer, he'll be complaining about Oncologists being out of work.

Well things being as they are all the Oncologists, unless working privately for $800 an hour, would have long fled to scene to a city they can afford at least to eat out in. Hardly appropriate comment under the circumstances.

Might want to check wages of wait/bar staff in Rome/Malta flag. Or are you suggesting lower paid assies should get paid less to get you a cheaper chicken parmie?

Yet the food industry pays some of the lowest wages. It is not only about wages. Although that plays a part. It is the rental of the premises (massive price increases over 'boom' years, so much so that a large number have closed) It is poor marketing. Failure to see present day realities. And the big one poor quality food at expensive prices and a take it or leave it attitude.

Why exactly do you live in Perth Flag ?

Well the East Coast would be rather close to you. Is your question some reflection on the on bringing to attention the actual reality to living in Perth, raised? If genuine it is because it is the place I live. Doesn't mean to say I need to endorse what goes on nor to bring attention to the obvious rip offs taking place across the board.

I haven't been in an RSL or bowls club since moving to Tasmania. Been to the Country Club (casino thing) at Launceston - nice buffet there for a decent price.

and that's the thing we look around for the best which suits our needs and/or wants, and that includes prices, type, style and venue. For example very rarely would I go to a restaurant and have fish and chips, when I can get equal or better quality from a local fish shop. Also I think Mac Donalds is expensive (besides it being crap) but have no problem paying $ 000's for a cruise and having the delicious food on them. However by rarely eating out at expensive restaurants and never at Macca's or from the food vans at work this helps towards the cost of the cruise.

Well a lot of people must be taking it and obviously can afford to do so.

While I agree on the cruise bit (best value, these days) I don't think eating out should be a 'special' occasion. I don't think Perth prices, which escalated dramatically since about 2005 should go unchallenged. It was not always the case and 'boom' times are over.

To be rated along with cities like New York or Tokyo is plainly ridiculous. It is not a world city, not even a tourist city of any real dimension and yet we are forced into paying over the top prices for most everything, and so many don't blush an eyelid. Bizarre.

I agree about the eating out thing. I like to eat out as a treat - if you eat out all the time you become jaded and occasionally I'm disappointed as some restaurants don't offer a varied vegetarian menu so I usually end up with a fish dish of some description. I haven't been in a Maccas for over 30 years. The smell of the place turns my stomach. As far as lunch time food - I used to take my own lunches to work. Usually managed to save $50 a week doing so. You can tell I'm Scottish can't you? :cute:

Well...hard question that. With an easy answer. In general Yes. Not about money. About attitude. Both on and off the field. Have had a lot of dealings over the past half year. Generally left underwhelmed in all but the bill.[/QUOTE]

We would not expect anything else from you flag:wink:

Don't lie. If you, you'd expect a tip on top off rip off rates.

And I'm a Yorkshire man, but is it not a question of saving $50 but more about not spending $50 in the first place? and then that $50 can be used more for your treats and needs!

Yes you can. Nothing fake about you. Although nothing wrong with being shrewd. I haven't been in a Maccas for probably as long. I wouldn't think of such a place. A Pizzeria close to me is as close as it gets but seldom eat Pizza either.

Going out should be an experience. I prefer something that I would be unlikely to have at home. I enjoy an ambiance around me and usually prefer to sit al fresco.

I have a v different view on Perth to Flag.

I have no problem finding lovely places to eat for a v decent price. I can go to numerous restaurants/pubs anywhere in Perth, sit in and dine with a lovely sea/river view without breaking the bank.

I buy a glass of wine for $6. A main course for $10. I can get afternoon tea, ie two scones, jam and cream plus tea/coffe for $5 all with a lovely view that some people would sell their soul for.

We have the weather, the beaches, the hills, so much to do for free.

You can do so much, with v little in Australia and most people do, those with an open mind anyway

I think it's really hit and miss in Perth. Price absolutely no guarantee of quality/experience. Most places much of a muchness price wise. Some excellent places offering lunch dishes for $15-20 dinner $20-30. Some crappy places offering same for same price. I reckon it's the same the world over though isn't it? Very much depends on what you want. Some brilliant cheap and cheerful high quality fresh food places usually run by Asians.

This^^^^

Perth, as most cities really, can be very hit and miss.

Use review websites such as Zomato (formerly Urbanspoon) to sort the wheat from the chaff and one will rarely be disappointed.

Forewarned is forearmed.

I used to find it this way in the boom, not now though. Thankfully the places seems to be upping their game.

Now I have too much choice on where to go for a decent cheap meal, don't really do the Asian places.

Up and down the coast, so much on offer. OH n I hardly eat in these days.
