Adelaide to Brisbane - Primary Schools

Guest

Recommended Posts

My husband has an opportunity to work in Salisbury QLD but we're after help/advice on good primary schools (state or catholic) around that area say within 20km radius and in turn advice on nice areas to live near the school.

Our boys currently attend a small (250 pupil) catholic primary school in Brighton, Adelaide and we're looking for something similar. Good reputation, good community feel.

Trouble we have is we'd be moving over these summer holidays while all the schools are closed so wont really have a chance to tour any or get a good feel on how they function on a day to day basis.

Would be great if someone knows both states and the schooling system for advice  but all info welcome.

Thanks in advanced.

Hi

I don;t know Adelaide sorry so cant really compare,, i do know the areas surrounding Salisbury though and i think if you extended your 20km radius you would find much nicer areas to settle in.

When you do find a few schools to shortlist ,have a look on facebook to see if they have community pages for that area, this would be a good way to see what other parents think about certain schools.

Thanks Cal. How much further would you think we'd need to look and in what direction?

So far I've been looking along the river at places like Seventeen Mile Rock although it doesn't seem to have many schools. Kenmore right up to about Toowong?

Cheers

I would've thought 20km would be ok Cal?

The Gap just about fits into that and has great schools.

Indooroopilly has some good schools.

Toowong has a lovely primary.

I have had friends who lived in the Chelmer area and loved it.

Another resource for schools is the myschool website.

Agree with Alaska that western suburb area is lovely lived there for quite a few years. Graceville State is a really good school. With Catholic schools look at Holy Family at Indooroopilly a very good school http://www.holyfamilyps.qld.edu.au/Pages/default.aspx

Depending on your income there are also schools like Brisbane Boys College, or St Adians ( all girls), plus good schools in Taringa, and St Lucia so that whole area has a lot to offer.

You are also only a short train trip into the city for top catholic schools like All Hallows year 5 - 8 (all Girls) https://www.ahs.qld.edu.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58&Itemid=70 and St Josephs http://www.terrace.qld.edu.au/ again from gr 5 (all boys)

I would have thought they were a tad further than 20km,commuting wise (not as the crow flies) but if not then i agree they are all nice areas and Indoorpilly would probably be top of my list due to its shops and good schools.

I live in Sherwood. There is a lovely primary school that all the posh locals seem to take their kids to, so can't be that bad. It is a beautiful area, lovely and green, good local community, local shops and facilities and so close to Indooroopilly for shopping and also just 20 mins on train to the city. It is expensive to buy/rent here but worth it IMHO. Salisbury not that exciting for living!

Thanks for the info Tina2. I did come across the Holy Family school Indooroopilly website but couldn't see much information about their extra curricular activities. The boys are both enrolled into piano lessons which take part during school hours here in SA. I do like the fact though that Holy Family only has 280 pupils.

I also come across the following school sites and wondered if you knew much about them...

Our Lady of the Rosary in Kenmore - http://www.olrkenmore.qld.edu.au/Pages/default.aspx

St Ignatius in Toowong - http://www.stignatiustoowong.qld.edu.au/Pages/default.aspx

St Sebastians in Yeronga - http://www.stsebastiansyeronga.qld.edu.au/index.html

I did also come across Ambrose Treacy which looks very elite? http://www.atc.qld.edu.au/

Thanks for the other links year 5 and beyond, we're not quite there for a few years but both look like nice schools!

Hi, first in regards to catholic high schools including those from Gr 5, there is a good size wait list and parents put there names down when there children are very young to secure a place. It dosnt mean you have to send your children to that school just that you secure a place. Many parents put there name down at 2 or 3 schools. There is a small payment which is not refundable but again something that parent just accept to know there is a place held if they want it..

Our Lady of the Rosery is a bit further out and to be honest the school does not do well on Naplan results.

St Ignatius is actually a boarding and day school, and I believe it has quite a few extra curricular music activities but again a mixed bag as far as academic results go.

I know St Sebastians offer Piano lessons but there academic results are not that good.

In all honesty Graceville State Primary has better academic results than any of the above schools so maybe you could look at Piano lessons out side of schools.

Depending on your budget there is St Peters Lutheran at Indooroopilly which is an outstanding school and goes from prep through to gr 12. If you dont know much about Lutheran schools they are a mix of catholic and C of E. and rapidly growing in popularity here in Qld. Really dont think there is anything you could fault the school on. Excellant academics, vast sports facilities and excellant music program.

Hi, all I can tell you about Gumdale State School is that they do have music program but not sure how exstencive it is but academically its quite a good school. The school at Wakerley is the Agnew school run by the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church I suggest you look the Brethern up before considering the school. Also different schools start back at different times. Private schools have now closed for Chrismas but you might catch some of the state schools to ask when you can look around. Most schools do put on a limited number of staff early in the new year as over here Feb is the start of the new school year and many people move at that time and need to sort out schools. So if you send out some emails I am sure staff from both state and private schools will contact you as soon as they are back at work and can arrange a tour for you

Remember private schools may have a wait list. If this is the case your best solution is to put the children in the local state school until you can get into your chosen private school (providing the wait list is not to long of course, if it is you may have to look at your second choice.

It may help you to use http://www.whereis.com you can key in a suburb and press search and it will give you a map of that area and on the left is a list of things you can key in like shopping centers and they will appear on the map. you can also press directions and key in 2 suburbs or addresses and it will give you the route, time and distance between the 2 suburbs might help to look at places to live and the drive to work.

  • 2 weeks later...

Dont know a lot about Green Bank except that Mirvac are about to build 3000 houses out there. http://www.marble.com.au/news-and-resources/news/mirvac-greenbank-queensland/ Its not that far from Browns plains which tends to be a more lower socio economic area, but is also not that far from Springfield Lakes which has a lot to offer and there is a ST Peters Campus there so an excellant school. Canterbury Collage also has a very good name to be very honest the Lutheran and C of E schools tend to be better than the catholic schools, both in disapline and facilitis unless you go to the really large catholic schools in Brisbane its self. I guess you could put them into a catholic primary then move them to th city for high school if you prefer the children to be in catholic schools. However I think if you get them into St Peters or Canterbury you wont want to move them as they are both very good schools. Sorry not sure about St Bernadiens.

Have a look on Realestate.com. around waterford you might still find a place with a bit more land and its close to canterbury college, then use where is to see the distance from your work and chosen school. Same with Springfield Lakes, its a nice area, lots of shops and large stores like IKEA and COSCO are building out there.
