Cant agree with you more Jaq,as a carer/support worker for the elderly myself i have worked and paired up with loads of different girls in the uk ,you can tell in half an hour who is in it for the money and who is there for the love of the client.

From the aged care ive seen in Oz so far ,i think its on par with the uk, ,as you say its the carers who make a home like its the teachers who make a school.

Hi

Can I ask a question when yoiu return home? how long do you stay for weeks months , if you went how would you provide for yourself seeing a lot of people in uk are struggling with the pensions and are contemplating working to late 60`s. How do you know you would be happy. A lot of people struggling and want to back to uk came on the recce holiday and living here ,the reality is diffewrent. Having been here for 30 yearts onlty going back for holidays tou prob are in the same mindsey. The Uk has changed in 30 years esp in the last 5 years people are feeling alienated in their own country by govt. I used to do a bit of voluntary work for the aged. If you yhink you are isolated a lot of old folk are isolated in the uk. The only social life is going to the daycare centres for friendship but these are closing. Family ignore them, they are scared to go out at night because of the threat of mugging. In the nice friosty winter yhey have to decide sometimes whether put the heating on or food. You have to take the chocolatr box glasses off. and smell the tea

I go for at least a month, more usually 6 weeks when I go home and I try and get there at least every 10 - 12 months. I do get quite a feeling for what is happening for older people - my remaining family there are all elderly (apart from my son of course) and my friends are all, like me, at retirement age and have their elderly parents so I really do think I have a good grasp of what is there and what isnt. I can compare what I have here with my friends who have had a similar work history and background and IMHO what is on offer for them is not on offer for me. I dont have any chocolate box glasses at all thanks very much, I am one of the most realistic people around (I have had to be in the work that I have done over the years and also now do).

I have no doubt that there are some isolated old people in UK - in the same way that there are some very isolated old people here. I have no doubt that there are a range of care homes in UK, in the same way that there are a range of care homes here. I have no doubt that there are older people in UK who are being forced to sell their homes in order to get care in the same way that there are older people who are forced to sell their homes here for the same reason. However, when I am 84 I wont have free prescriptions, I wont have access to meals on wheels, I will have to pay for all my medical appointments, I wont have free dental care, I wont have free bus travel (all of which my parents do). In the next few years I wont be able to afford three or four trips to the continent every year, I wont have nearly the range of weekend destinations, I wont be able to go on craft weekends with the WI nor will I be able to afford a barn in France - just a few things that some of my UK friends have done in the past little while.

I really think that people who havent been here yet - or havent been here for very long - miss the point. There comes a time for many of us when we realize that we dont belong here - it is quite ephemeral really. For a long time we go along with it because it feels like you are on a long holiday but after a while, as with all holidays, there gets the point where you want to go home to the place were you do belong.

I didnt have one iota of the problems that a lot of folk on here have had settling in - we just upped and left the UK with about a month's organization, I didnt bat an eyelid about leaving with my parents' only grandchild, I didnt get major homesick pangs for the first 10 or 15 years I was here, I had a good job which I enjoyed, I had friends (very transient as I think most adult developed friendships are), I travelled widely and my kids had reasonable opportunities (not that much different from the opportunities that my friends' kids have had) and it was OK. Now I want to go home - the holiday is over thanks very much.

Sorry OP for hijacking, I just get really ticked off when people assume that those of us who are here dont know what is happening in the rest of the world because they are so intent on proving that Australia is going to be paradise on wheels. Today I spent the best part of the day mopping up a colleague whose father is dying in London - she is desperate to go home but can barely afford it (working for a long time in Aus hasnt enabled us to keep up with the rest of the world), she doesnt want to be here but her kids are here so she is trapped and she feels horribly trapped, she will have to be working until she is 70 in order to make ends meet as it is so please excuse me - paradise this aint!

Thanks for your reply

Can u shed any light on the possibility of work on a casual basis for aged care workers in UK. Is it similar to Oz eg. agency is the way to go if you dont want to commit to one workplace? Is there a particular region that is more likely to have work than another, we want to travel around and see UK at our leisure so dont want to commit to one place. I would really appreciate any info you have:jiggy:

Hey Quoll

What a great source of information your post is for me. I was beginning to think that I was returning to Chicago or something. As you say Paradise is what and where you want it to be and it changes with your life and times. Your words "the holiday is now over thanks" is just how I feel too. I dont regret the life I've had here how could I. I have three wonderful children many good friends but IT'S NOT HOME!!!!

The Uk were as desperate for staff as they are here. You can also do support worker for the elderly in the community without any qualifications. As i was leaving the company i worked for were taking on stacks of polish girls as they would work really long hours.Dont think youll have a problem though.

Hi

In the uk, England most of the local authority care homes are being phased out l;ack of funds,. There are lots of private care homes and these are run for profitiability of the owners . There is not a lot in the line of agency as it proves to be more expensive for the proprieters. The care home wages are poor, the private ones and the ownerset on east europeans who work over the scheduled hours without penalty rates.. Anoother option is cash in hand payment but as this is against government law they pay peanuts

There are lots of us around Elizabeth - once you start mentioning it a lot of (unexpected) people come out of the woodwork and say just the same things. There are many of us who thought we were the only one - it is nice to feel sane again though, knowing that you arent bonkers!!!

Yes I totally agree with Earlswood.Australia is'nt the country it used to be either. When I moved there with my family in 1970,yes it was considered the lucky country. Why is it so hard for poms that are emigrating there or thinking about it to accept Oz has the same levels of crime, drug abuse ect?Its probably fairly easy for poms to think "Well I've had enough of the UK,lets go to Oz"as soon as someone posts a negative post about Oz all hell breaks loose!Time to face reality everyone.I live in the UK (for the time being anyway)and will only return to Oz for family reasons (kids are aussie)not because I can wipe my hands of the UK and leave with a smug expression on my face.I am actually battling with the thought of returning to Oz believe it or not!!!WhyBecause I have loved living in the UK,and having lived in OZ for 30 yrs know the reality of what its like.I feel in 10 yrs time maybe, there will be a huge influx of poms returning here, because Oz is'nt all its cracked up to be.Sorry to rain on people's parade. If you are moving to Oz expect it to be the same as the UK but with the sun!!!

I take it then these things don't happy in "sunny" Australia.Wise up will yah?I stream Adelaide radio through my computer and consequently hear the news. Some innocent guy got stabbed last week outside a pub in Adelaide city?Even whilst I was living there I heard of horrendous crimes, some with children involved, too gruesome to even write about. This country (UK) is tame compared to Oz!!!!Just more land to bury bodies thats all !!!!!There is also a huge drug problem in Oz,like it or lump it so anyone moving there to give your kids a better life, think twice!Yes there are even huge and I mean huge council estates in Oz that have dole bludgers/druggies/single parents all thriving thankyou very much!Immigrants (the greeks/viets/italians and the rest do not assimilate either in Oz,and I just heard on the news last week (Oz news)that the muslim community in Sydney are putting forth plans to build a muslim only school for 1,200 students?Same problems just more sunshine. When I first married (an aussie)we could only afford a council house, and believe me it was'nt pretty. Our house was fine it was what was going on outside it that scared me.We had herion addicts opposite us,they ended up losing their kids due to child abuse (I witnessed some of it,horrible to say the least)we had our car stolen (it was at the time behind 6ft gates)kids running riot, throwing stones at windows, and yeah very depressing memories living there.Never again.

Hi

Come back and have a holiday to see what things are like. I think you'll be unpleasantly surprised at the changes. Have a holiday then make your decision.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Now that is really good advice.

I was very interested to read your candid comments. I firmly believe that "belonging" is more important than having a few more dollars each week - and havng said that we just manage anyway! I hope you're right about all the poms going home when the gilt has worn off. I just hope I'm one of them. cheers, Liz

Still doing that eh! I haven't lived in WA for 15 years and down here the Cole's I shop at has the very same staff it had when I first arrived. Except or the odd leaving and many of those are 'mature' grey haired and very helpful.

See Tassie is different - they call me by name - in over 20 years in WA never experienced that - no indeedy not.

Different states - and I have lived in most of them. Tassie is very different to all of the others and more like Cornwall.

Hi Supertramp, wow, there are so many people who are feeling the pull to go back to the UK. I too have been here for a long long time and I have to have my UK Fix every few years otherwise i can become physically sick with that awful aching feeling. Last time I went I cried for 8 hours on the way home because I really didn't want to leave England. Am currently overdue for another trip, hence my obsession with this site right now. Can't go for good due to circumstances way beyond my control but still dream about it. Cheers, Liz

Hi there Quoll, - a kindred spirit - unable to return home due to family circumstances. I spend too much time google earth-ing my old UK house and looking up real estate sites in the UK just to look at what I can't have. Must be a masochist..... Cheers, Liz:wacko:

LOL me too - and I look at the webcams. I have even been known to pore over the traffic jam cams in London (wondering if DS was walking over Vauxhall Bridge to work!) I look at Cambridge market square every day too.

It's a real b*gger! Maybe we will win Tatts and all our troubles will be over!

Dear Son - No1 son was living in Vauxhall and working in Victoria St so he would walk across the bridge to work most days. He isnt there any more but I still look to see what is happening on the bridge. LOL I had DH looking at Trafalgar Square webcam when I was there last time, just so I could wave at him - I stood in front of Nelson for ages, smsing him with instructions for how to do it.
