North or South Sydney

Hi Im looking for advice on where is best to rent if working in Roseville. I wouldnt have a car so would need to commute to work.

I was originally looking at South of the bridge but now thinking North may be better for getting to work.

I would like to rent somewhere with a good busy vibe, a bit like Glasgows Westend. Nowhere too quiet or suburban as Iam single 30 something and would want to meet people and make new friends. Also and area with good links to get South and to beaches.

Any suggestions and advice would be very welcome, thanks.

Well I would have said stay north to make commute easier, but it is going to be suburban around Roseville, very nice, but suburban. When you get here, perhaps just take your time looking at some of the suburbs near the bridge itself like Kirribilli, St Leonards, North Sydney to see if they have enough of a vibe for you. If not then perhaps somewhere just over the bridge, but staying north. I wouldn't go south of CBD though, if you have to traverse the length of the CBD your journey will be slow and painful.

I had also thought of a beach location, like Manly, but the journey would to tricky on public transport.

Thanks I had looked at Kirribilla and thought that might be a good base. Are there many cafes, bars etc?

Is an apartment to rent for approx $600 per week (with a balcony...) realistic?

Ill have a look at St Leonards thanks. Hadnt though od Manly, are buses quite good from there?

Thanks x

I think that there is plenty around the area, but then I am not bothered too much about nightlife so I am easily pleased. Suburbs in Sydney all kind of roll into one too, so it is not like you have to stay in Kirribilli, you wouldn't even notice when you venture into the next suburb, it isn't distinct towns like we have in the UK. I have had a quick look on www.domain.com.au, there are a lot of places that would be out of budget but looks to be plenty within it is as well.

Sorry confusing the issue with Manly, I thought it would be worth a look if you had your own car, but no the public transport connections are likely to be very difficult for your route.

It's about half an hour on the train from Central (near where I live in Surry Hills) to Roseville, so I would have to add on another ten minutes to walk to Central (though I usually do it in about six minutes.) But what is more important is how far from Roseville station you will be working? Walking distance, similar to my walk to Central, or less, no problem then, but if it is a long walk, or involves a bus, that makes it more difficult, even if you live around Kirribilli or North Sydney, where you should find plenty going on. I prefer Surry Hills though. The sample trip I have pasted is for Monday morning during the rush hour. So, where are you going to be working in Roseville? That is the important question!

There seem to be plenty of flats in your price range, in the Surry Hills area. I did a search on http://www.domain.com.au, maximum $600 per week rent, for an appartment, and including surrounding suburbs, like Darlinghurst, Chippendale.

http://www.domain.com.au/search/rent/property/types/apartment-unit-flat/state/nsw/area/eastern-suburbs/region/sydney-region/suburb/surry-hills/?ssubs=1&to=600&searchterm=surry+hills%2c+nsw%2c+2010&disp

I love going to the beach too, but I prefer to live in the City and travel out to whichever beach takes my fancy. Bondi, Bronte, Clovelly, Coogee, are all about 7 kilometres away from my home. If you live at one of those beaches, then you have to add travel time into the city, usually by bus, unless you drive. If you lived at Manly, or one of the other Northern Beaches, you would have similar problems, with no direct bus services (probably) to Roseville, and no trains. What is the name of the company/organization you expect to be working for? I just checked the map, and as well as 'Roseville' itself, there is also 'Roseville East' and your proposed job might actually be in an adjoining suburb.

I don't like commuting which I why I moved from Narrabeen on the Northern Beaches to Surry Hills in the first place. It might not be a bad drive from Narrabeen to Roseville, come to think of it, but I'm sure there is no bus service.

I think Barcoo Street is on west of Roseville, so miles from station.

I am new to Sydney and getting to know my way around, moved to East Lindfield where my wife already had a house. From my travels on bus and one brief stop there I wonder if Cammeray might suit. Seems to have a range of cafes etc on Miller Street. This is on a main bus route that goes past Willis Park, get off there and it could be short walk to Barcoo Street for work commute. Going the other way a straight through to CBD, and also a short hop to one of the major east/west routes that would get you to Manly.

If you go to http://www.transportnsw.info then you can check out public transport options from different areas, or down load Opal app for iPhone etc.

Cammeray could work! I used to live there, on the corner of Ernest and Miller Streets, and it is close to Crows Nest, North Sydney, Neutral Bay. Northbridge, might be OK too, a little further north of Cammeray. There are a couple of bus routes linking up to Barcoo St. There is a direct bus from Cammeray - from the City actually, though with a walk at the other end. Chatswood is good for getting to Barcoo Street, so it might be worth considering living there. Chatswood has plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes, but it's not so hot in the bar/pub scene.

I've got this neat little app on my phone called 'Moovit' which is as good as the State Transit bus/train websites. It says it would take me about 50-55 minutes to get from my home to Barcoo St, leaving at 7am tomorrow, walk to Central, train to Chatswood, bus to near Barcoo St, and a short walk.,

Barcoo St has a mixture of both residential and industrial sites. I Googled it and was looking at the photographs - moving along the various roads, satellite not photographs! You could maybe get a place to live in the same street and walk to work. I hate commuting, so I'd always be up for that!

Thanks very much! Iam liking the sound of Cammeray if it has a good choice of bars and cafes etc.

You have quite a few options for "good busy vibes" close to Roseville : Chatswood, Lane Cove, Crows Nest, North Sydney, Kirribilli or Neutral Bay. My pick would be Crows Nest. There are regular buses to St Leonards train station; but you could easily walk. Takes me ten minutes to walk from St Leonards train station into the heart of Crows Nest. Then St Leonards to Roseville on the train is about ten minutes. Only 20 minutes between work and home in Sydney is pretty impressive. In Crows Nest, you have a good bar, restaurant and cafe scene. Great little shops. You could even (if feeling fit) walk into the city. I use to live in St Leonards and would walk into the city CBD several mornings a week. Otherwise Crows Nest is within walking distance of three train stations and then just ten minutes into the city. You are also quite close to one of the most gorgeous beaches in Sydney via bus: Balmoral Beach.

I think its near Barcoo Street

Barcoo Street is only 2.4km from Chatswood station; so you could easily walk.

You could also take a pushbike on the train and ride.

But there is also a bus every 12 - 15 minutes or so.

Going back to my comment about Crows Nest being a great place to live. There are several training colleges and a hospital in St Leonards (the next suburb over). Students and staff often are looking for flat share accommodation.

Rent can be expensive in Sydney; so sharing makes sense. Plus a great way to meet new people and their set of friends.

Thanks for this, I will have a look at Crows Nest as interested if it has good bars and cafes etc. A walk across the bridge into the city sounds fab!! I have just looked at Balmoral Beach and it looks really nice and very handy!!

I take it when it comes to renting somewhere, I cant arrange from the UK and would have to maybe arrange a hotel for the first week or so?

Thanks!!

You probably need 2-3 weeks in temporary accommodation before you find and move into the more permanent place.

From what you have said so far - I think you will REALLY LOVE Crows Nest.

It is well-known for its young professionals around 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s.

It has a community village feel and community type activities, like a yearly street festival, art shows and evening activities (classes in yoga, dance, drawing, meditation and pilates) – which is a great way to meet new people.

It has a wide variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. Boutique clothes & shoe shops, wine shops, bakeries and a few decent pubs. A good practical supermarket and some upmarket gourmet grocers, a couple of organic food and healthfood shops too. I particularly like the wide choice of different restaurant cuisines available…..anything from Vegan, Healthfood, American, Himalayan, Thai and Chinese to Italian, French, German, English and plain old Aussie.

The following two websites will give you more information:

agfg.com.au/guide/nsw/sydney/lower-north-shore/crows-nest/listings/restaurants-dining/

weekendnotes.com/sydney/

In fact, for such a small suburb it is packed with things to do!

It is serviced by regular buses and is within waking distance (ten minutes) of three train stations. It is also within walking, jogging or bike riding distance to ferries or across the bridge to the Sydney CBD.

It is close to an excellent Olympic Pool and library at North Sydney. Plus it is close to beautiful Balmoral Beach (and a few other beaches), via a short bus trip. Plus easy to get a taxi home from the city if need be after a night out there (Sydney Taxi drivers hate going long distances with fares!!) And not forgetting, it is close to your intended place of work.

It will be hard to arrange a proper flat rental from overseas. It is best to pre-book into Short Stay accommodation for 6 – 12 weeks (so you have your arrival covered), then look for somewhere more permanent once you are actually here.

Last time I tried to post a website for you, my post did not (and still has not) appeared. So please add in the WWW yourself, and check out the following Short Term Accommodation options:

Most of these offer discounted rates for stays of a month or more – so pays to speak with the manager, rather than just relying on the advertised rates.

I know the area quite well - so if you have any more questions - just ask.
