Early Years Teacher skills assessment question

Recommended Posts

Hi

I did 3-7 PGCE and it doesn't actually say that on any certificates, and you will be qualified in the UK to teach 3-11 anyway so that's not a problem. It will only be the placement you do that differ from the 5-11 PGCE and I would say try get a nursery placement for your EYFS part as this will help show experience with the younger ones. I have sent my stuff off this week to get assessed so keep you posted!

My PGCE specified 3-7 too and my application is with AITSL. It must be the same in the UK for all early years PGCE's (being 3-7). I'll let you know how I get on too.

To be an ECT in Aus you also need to register with ACECQA they have a stipulation that you need experience with children age 0-2 which the UK PGCE does not offer. I'm a bit unsure with what to do here some people, like your migration agent have suggested an extra course once in Australia whereas others have said a volunteer placement in the UK will be enough. I'm just going to wait to hear off AITSL first before chasing any of this up x

Hi everybody, I have just been reading some of your posts. I have a three year degree in Early Childhood studies and a PGCE primary 3-7 years. I have put my application in to AITSL too. I am just wondering about jobs over there as primary jobs seem to be very scarce at the moment, are you all hoping to go in to teaching primary or working in a nursery?

As I want to stick with Early Years (nursery and reception) it looks like private nursery may be my only option? It seems once AITSL say yes (fingers crossed) I'll have to register with the teaching board of the state we want to go to and ACECQA. Heard of lots of people struggling to get Early Years Teacher status with ACECQA as they are assessing PGCEs as the equivalent of a diploma. All very confusing. My degree previous to the PGCE was not in education or a related subject it was in Applied Animal Studies so as that's a bit random think I may struggle for registration :swoon:

Hello! Hope all is going well with everyone applications!

My AITSL should be back any day now (so nervous) and I have my IELTS booked for next week so hopefully will get the EOI all in within the next month! Could anyone help shed some light on the health checks please - I am unsure if I get these done before I do the EOI or after if I get invited to apply?

Thanks

SOJ :)

First time reading this thread and good old AITSL still seem to be stressing people out! I'm secondary but had a drama with them as well. What I would say is I believe that some sort of acknowledgement is given to a positive AITSL assessment as I was asked to provide it with my WA teacher registration. Maybe that's not the case elsewhere I'm not sure you'd have to check.

In terms of medical don't do this until you have applied for your visa and dependent on your urgency to move wait for your case officer to request it. Your deadline to activate your visa is based on the earliest date of your medical and police check.

Good luck guys, I feel your pain!

Good Luck with AITSL and your IELTS (so many acronyms lol) as @Benji1980 has said you have 12 months to activate your visa from the date of your health check and police check-whichever is the earliest. I won't apply for these until a case officer asks just to give ourselves extra time to activate x

Hey! Thanks for all the help, but unfortunately we have fallen at the first hurdle - AITSL have said my quals are not recognised! I'm gutted. We now have 2 options - redo for primary teacher and go for state nominated visa or look somewhere else altogether! I'm just so glad I didnt sign up with a immigration agent or it would of been a very expensive set back. Good luck everyone and thank you again for all your advice and support - its been very much appreciated!

Selina, if you know mind me asking what are your qualifications? I have a BA Hon Early Childhood Studies with Practitioner Option and Lower Primary PGCE (3-8). My husband says I should fight it but I'm not sure its worth the hassle! x

Oh no @Benji1980 did appeal his decision and was successful. I've spoken to people who have called AITSL to get a more detailed explanation as to why they didn't receive a positive assessment. Keep me posted on what you find out, good luck x

That's made me more confused! It just said they weren't relevant to Oz requirement! I haven't contacted them, was a bit too upset to do earlier but will definitely reconsider! I have 4 years at uni and way more than the 45 days. They only thing I didn't include was my work experience since qualifying, as I am not in a position to tell my employer, which is a good job I didn't with a negative assessment but on the other don't know if that went against me? To fight it is the same price as reapplying for primary! I just don't know what to do arghh!!

I didn't send any info about my employment either. It makes no sense as to why it was rejected, definitely give them a call. I can totally understand why you are upset but push for answers. Primary teacher isn't on the SOL but is on CSOL but I think that means you need a job offer in certain states, which can be difficult (but not impossible). Don't give up! Hopefully it's just a silly mistake on their part and it can easily be resolved. Fingers crossed for you x

All it says on my letter is that I don't have a specialism in early years in my PGCE. My PGCE certificate doesn't state lower primary so can kind of see why they might think this and because the modules had the same names as the upper primary PGCE, but with a EYFS focus instead of KS2. Also 50 per cent of my essays, including the research project where EYFS based but this isn't clear on transcripts. Did your PGCE clearly state it was lower primary? (Sorry for all the questions, but really appreciate the help)

If we did it as primary teachers we would have to go for state nominated visa which isn't want we want as not in the areas we want to move to.

Did you do your supervised teaching in an early childhood class?

Your final long prac must be in that setting to qualify you to teach early childhood in most states. For example, in WA that would mean a kindy or pre-primary class (4 and 5 year olds).

Yes my PGCE certificate did state Early Years, it says PGCE primary Early Years foundation and key stage one on it. I did send a letter from my Early years tutor stating what was covered on the PGCE and included a breakdown of how the course related to early years and how the Early Years specific module was assessed. Maybe you could request something similar? It might be worth speaking to a migration agent about it or call AITSL and ask if more evidence about the course would change their view? If you did go for state sponsorship there is only a moral obligation to stay in that state, they can't legally make you stay x

My middle placement was in a reception class, but my final was in a year 1 class. I don't know why my certificate doesn't state it. It's so annoying because I purposely did the lower PGCE as ECE Is on the shortage list! Thanks again for the advice, I going to get in touch with people today and see what they say! I'll keep you posted! X

My placements were Reception, year 1 and then Reception. Did your evidence of your supervised teaching practice state the age ranges that you worked with? It must be very frustrating, I chose Early Years because it was on the SOL too. Good Luck x

That is pretty much what mine said, I tried to appeal to be told it would stand as I had no 0-2 teaching, which was ironic as I had completed an early Childhood Studies degree, and placements with that age was a requirement. I'm feel so sorry for you, as they really needs early years teachers.I suggest appealing as well. Good luck

Hello - little update!!

I emailed AITSL saying I wanted to appeal my outcome and explained about my PCGE asking them what they require from university to demonstrate it was Lower Primary. I got an automated response that said they would contact me within 5-7 working days. I waited for 8, received nothing, so then I phoned! The gentleman on the phone explained it was quite common with British PGCE as the transcripts are vague and the certificates don't always state it. I asked what he suggested I should request from university and all he said was 'make sure its specific to you' and he would email more details. However the email just explains the progress which I have to do to appeal. I have emailed back asking again! I have contacted Uni and they said just to let them know what they want - but I still have no idea what AITSL really want! Selina - what information did your uni provide and in how much detail? Was it a long letter?

Hope all in going well with your applications!

Fleks - did you appeal then or just leave it? The shortage cap is nearly 2000 for ECE and they only had 25 apply so far - not surprising if its so hard! What are you doing now your out there? Is it worth all this hassle??

Hi, I just left it in the end, as my husband was the main applicant also on the SOL list. I now work in primary doing supply. Which suits me better. I'm personally undecided on is it worth it, as Australia like all places somethings you love, others you hate. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone, but I imagine if you appeal and get it, that doesn't mean that Acecqa will agree. I never had my degree or PGCE accepted by Acecqa even though the degree was accepted by Aitsl and NSW D of E. So I am not allowed to work as a early years teacher anyway. So in a nutshell Aitsl can say one thing but each state has it's own accrediting body, and they have there own rules. It's a definite minefield. Good luck.
