Dear Friends,

I am seeking your valuable advice for submitting EOI for Australia Immigration. On the Education tab I found the followings-

* Honours in Science, Business or Technology

* Bachelor in Science, Business or Technology

Basically, my education in title is Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Physics and it was 4 years long full-time study in Bangladesh.

I would like to know which option I should select? Is there any major difference?

Thanks in advance!

In Australia, you need to have undertaken 4 years of full time study (so not having a year in industry or a year abroad for a language I think) in order to have an Honours Degree, whereas e.g. in UK, you will achieve an Honours Degree as long as you've studied the required number of credits. There was a similar thread on here asking this question and I believe that the answer was that you have to put Bachelor if a 3 year course and you can put Honours if a 4 year one but I'm not 100% sure. Since yours was a 4 year course then I suspect Honours will be fine but perhaps asking someone like @Adam Grey for advise would be better as your application will be refused if you claim points you aren't entitled too.

Here is an outline of the criteria used to assess the comparability with an Australian qualification of degrees conferred in your country, by Sectionl 1 institutions. There are similar but different criteria for lower-level institutions.

[h=1] Higher Education Section 1 [/h] The following guidelines refer to Bachelor degrees as requiring two, three or four (or more) years of study following the Intermediate (10 +2 years of schooling) or Higher Secondary Certificate (12 years of schooling).

  1. A two-year pass Bachelor degree awarded in the First or Second Division or Class by a listed institution is assessed as comparable, in broad terms, to the educational level of an AQF Advanced Diploma.

This assessment refers to comparative levels of achievement only, and does not refer to specified competency requirements for AQF qualifications or National Training Framework Training Packages, as these can only be determined by the relevant Australian assessing authority.

  2. A two-year pass Bachelor degree awarded in the Third or Pass Division or Class by a listed institution is assessed as comparable, in broad terms, to the educational level of an AQF Diploma.

This assessment refers to comparative levels of achievement only, and does not refer to specified competency requirements for AQF qualifications or National Training Framework Training Packages, as these can only be determined by the relevant Australian assessing authority.

  3. A three-year Honours Bachelor degree awarded in the First or Second Division or Class is assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Bachelor degree.

  4. A three-year Honours Bachelor degree awarded in the Third or Pass Division or Class, or a Bachelor degree awarded without class, by a listed institution, on completion of the three-year Honours programme is assessed as comparable, in broad terms, to the educational level of an AQF Advanced Diploma.

This assessment refers to comparative levels of achievement only, and does not refer to specified competency requirements for AQF qualifications or National Training Framework Training Packages, as these can only be determined by the relevant Australian assessing authority.

  5. Some listed universities offer or have offered a three-year Bachelor degree in a specialist field. Such degrees are assessed on a case by case basis.

  6. A Bachelor degree in a professional or specialised field (e.g. engineering, fine arts, business administration, law, medicine, pharmacy) requiring four or more years of study, awarded in any division or class by a listed institution, is assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Bachelor degree. The first degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is assessed in the same way.

  7. A postgraduate Bachelor of Education awarded in any division or class by a listed institution, requiring one year of study, for which the minimum entry requirement is a Bachelor degree, is assessed as representing an additional year of study at undergraduate level, and can be added; to the first degree, as described below. The Diploma of Education, formerly awarded by the University of Dhaka (Institute of Education) is assessed in the same way (see examples below).

    For example:

    • A one-year postgraduate Bachelor degree/Dip.Ed., awarded following a Bachelor degree assessed as comparable to the level of an Australian Bachelor degree or AQF Advanced Diploma, is assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Bachelor degree.

    • A one-year postgraduate Bachelor degree/Dip.Ed., awarded following a Bachelor degree assessed as comparable to the level of an AQF Diploma, is assessed as comparable, in broad terms, to the level of an AQF Advanced Diploma.

    • A one-year postgraduate Bachelor degree, awarded following a Bachelor degree assessed as comparable to the level of an AQF Certificate IV, is assessed as comparable, in broad terms, to the level of an AQF Diploma.

Dear Russell,

Have applied to Vetassess to get my 4 year Bachelor Degree in Hotel Management (Bachelor of Hotel Management) assessed. I got the degree from Bangalore University, India. Can you please advise me if its comparable to a AQF Bachelor Degree.

Also can you please tell me if the University is a Section 1 in AEI NOOSR.

I am really tensed about the situation, so just wanted your feedback.

Your help will be highly appreciated.
