Hi Guys!

I'm currently in the process of preparing to move to Australia for a year on a WHV 417 from the UK. I have came up with a list of questions that have been pondering my mind and slightly worrying me. I thought it would be easiest to list them here and if they have been answered in another forum please just feel to link me to the post, & hopefully most of them will get answered. Some may be stupid, but please don't laugh!:chatterbox:

Tax

What rate will I be taxed at?

I read somewhere I can claim back tax? is this true, and how so?

How do I get a tax file number and what do I need for it?

Is it legal to work when being paid for cash?

How do i get taxed when being paid in cash?

Money

What is the best way to get my money to Australia? Money Corp? draw it out in cash in the uk and then put it into an aussie bank account?

How do I prove my funds to the AU border when requested? does it have to be in cash? Can it be in online bank accounts?

How do I get a bank account in Australia?

What documents do I need to set up a bank account and is there a best bank to go with?

IF I take my money in cash, is it better to get it exchanged in the UK or in Australia?

Insurance

Do I need travel insurance? Is it best to get me covered in Aus or UK company?

Will I get a medicare number (like you do on a visit visa) and is it the same process?

Driving

I only have a Provisional UK licence.

Can I drive when in the car with a full qual driver?

Do I need to get a Australian L License?

Thanks for all your help!

Hi there.

You can't drive here on a provisional. You either need a full licence or to apply for an Aussie learners.

Tax, generally you would be taxed at a non resident rate and should not be able to claim anything back. If you manage to get a job which lasts a full six month then you can be taxed as a resident.

It is not legal to work cash in hand. You apply for a tax file number once you get here online.

You will be entitled to Medicare, but that doesn't always cover things like ambulances so travel insurance is not a bad idea, especially as your belongings are covered then too.

Tax

What rate will I be taxed at? It depends on your intentions, if you are travelling around, backpacking as the visa is designed for then the non resident rate is appropriate. If you settle in one area, then maybe resident.

I read somewhere I can claim back tax? is this true, and how so? No there is a load of baloney about WHV claiming tax back as if it is a given. If you overpay tax, you can get the overpayment back, most probably your tax will be deducted correctly.

How do I get a tax file number and what do I need for it? You just apply for it, follow the link on ATO website, you need to wait until you get here.

Is it legal to work when being paid for cash? An employer should be putting you through their books.

How do i get taxed when being paid in cash? The employer should deduct at source.

Money

What is the best way to get my money to Australia? Money Corp? draw it out in cash in the uk and then put it into an aussie bank account? Broker.

How do I prove my funds to the AU border when requested? does it have to be in cash? Can it be in online bank accounts? Bank statements, you are not expected to carry a suitcase of money!

How do I get a bank account in Australia? Follow the account opening process.

What documents do I need to set up a bank account and is there a best bank to go with? Ask them or follow the process, it will surely explain what you need.

IF I take my money in cash, is it better to get it exchanged in the UK or in Australia? I cannot think why it would be any different, it would be an equally stupid thing to do.

Insurance

Do I need travel insurance? Is it best to get me covered in Aus or UK company? Your choice, do you think you need insurance?

Will I get a medicare number (like you do on a visit visa) and is it the same process? You wont just "get" one by magic no.

Driving

I only have a Provisional UK licence.

Can I drive when in the car with a full qual driver? Of course not! You don't have a licence!

Do I need to get a Australian L License? You don't drive in the UK, why would you get an Australian licence? Have you got time to pass a test in UK, it is a much more convoluted process in Australia.

Thanks for all your help!
