HI everyone, I am researching my options for when I eventually move to oz.I am looking at getting a 489 visa and I would like peoples opinions on which area would be the best for me.I will be a qualified nurse and moving on my own. I will be around 42 when I move and would like somewhere near the sea as I would love to learn to scuba dive but I don't want to be to far from the city as will need to make a new social life for myself.Any opinions are welcome and I have plenty of time as I won't be starting the process until next jan but I like to have time to research. Thanks

I know very little about the health care system in SA these days, as I live in far north Queensland. Queensland is currently experiencing a right wing state government who appear to be intent on major reductions in the public health system. There have already been major redundancies throughout Queensland Health. I would suggest the you closely follow the state level online newspapers for the next few months to help you assess the likely working conditions. And not only the Murdoch press. The Queensland Nurses Award is due for review in the second quarter of 2015. I suspect that it won't go well, when one considers the problems medicine is currently having.

We are in Brisbane, my daughter is a trainee nurse and I am worried about cuts as described above. Not sure if Adelaide is better. I prefer Adelaide as a city but Brisbane has better weather if you like the heat. Scuba diving more accessible in QLd. I'd go where the work is!

It probably depends on what type of nursing you are specialised in, if it's ward work then you'll probably be able to get work fairly easily but the thing is with Adelaide is that people stick in the same job for years and years and don't move on. Just like England the public health system suffers from constant cutbacks and also senior management been there donkeys years too, Adelaide is very much a "who you know" city. Public health pays you slightly better.

The private health care is very much business run, they need to make profits to keep the hospitals running. If you've come from working in the NHS, it can be quite disturbing seeing how making money is an important factor in the doctors mentality. After several years it still makes me uncomfortable being aware of huge gaps (a gap is the difference between what the government will pay and what the surgeon charges) being paid by patients to doctors. This is the case in the whole of Australia.

However, those comments are negative ones and there is always a flip side. On the positive side you should be able to find work, contact hospitals before you arrive to test the waters.

I've only ever been to Queensland for holidays but their climate is very different to Adelaide. Lots of humidity and warm most of the year round. Adelaide is very dry, very hot summers with little rain and cool winters. I much prefer that but I've probably become acclimatised to it over the years. If scuba diving is your thing heading towards the Barrier reef might be an idea. Adelaide is a quiet city but it does have everything you need, beaches, countryside etc, it's just miles away from anywhere, much like all the other cities in Australia!

Good luck with your plans and move!

If your going for a 489 will that not dictate quite a bit where you can settle? Though that was for more remote areas?

This is what I thought as well. I believe the while of South Australia is classed as regional so you would be able to live and work anywhere, including Central Adelaide (assuming things haven't changed recently), but I'm not sure about Queensland. I would definitely look at what restrictions there are on where you can live and work in Queensland on your visa as this may have a bearing on whether it would be the best place for you at the moment especially if you want to be near the city for social reasons. Although I'm not sure how great Adelaide is for scuba diving. You may need to consider what your greatest priorities are, considering the restrictions on your visa type.

Thanks everyone, I can work anywhere in QLD except Brisbane and The Gold Coast and anywhere in SA on a 489 visa. I think much will come down to where the work is but I like to know the differences between the places and there's no way for me to find out except from you lovely bunch of people.I will definitely be looking around for work before leaving. Anymore advise is more than welcome xxx

Hi,

we have been living in Hove SA for about 2.5 years now and really like it. At the moment the job situation here isn't great, there seems to be a bit of a micro economy is SA, i don't know if that is the same for all states. I don't know if we will remain here forever because i worry about opportunities for our children, but it is a great place to raise a family. Think there are some good places to dive here, also there is Port Lincoln with the Great White shark dives. Good luck on whatever you decide

Climate would be another key thing for me. I don't like the hot and humid type heat, prefer the drier heat, which is lucky as we live in Adelaide.

End of the day, if you are happy to go to either state, I'd go where the work is.

Is that specific on the two Queensland locations or do you mean the South East corner? because you can live/work near or even in-between those two areas but still access all the benefits that they offer!

Though I live near Brisbane, I have also worked in SA, and I would say that the Brisbane area has the edge over Adelaide but only just, but again that is comparing it to what we want/need for our lifestyle, we could just as happily settle in SA and not have a worry in doing so, but there are places (most actually) in Qld that we would not want to settle in, mainly due to the more extremes of weather, isolation and work prospects, with the latter being a concern for me as it would involve more travel or working away from home, and the former more a concern for the wife!
