cheap hotels in sydney

Recommended Posts

Guest

Hi,

We arrive in Sydney on the 1st Jan, we managed to get cheap flights but realized we will need to book a hotel probably from thu-sunday. Can anybody recommend any where to stay cheap, either hotels or short term let, we seen some short term lets but the longer we let them no in advance the longer we have to stay for.

We was originally planning on getting a 6 month short term let without seeing the property but no where will be open with it being knew year. We are a family of 4, 2 adults 2 children ages 2 and 4. So these cheap flight working out a fortune, as obviously hotels we need to pay for breakfast dinner and tea. Any help much appreciated. thank you

I think the usual hotel websites cater for all budgets. It would probably make sense to look through those than get one or two particular recommendations on here.

In Sydney nobody is going to give you a 6 month let without you seeing it first, so being new year is not particularly disadvantaging you in that respect.

Yes - the rental market works very differently in Australia than in the UK. You can't just rock up to an estate agent, hand over the deposit and move in to a tenancy. You have to go to a viewing (held weekly on Saturdays), submit a bid, wait for your bid to be considered and then discover a few days later whether you have been accepted or not. You have no idea what other people are bidding or whether the agent will be telling the landlord that you look like good or bad tenants.

The OP should look for longer term holiday accommodation rather than a hotel. Then get in touch with estate agencies asap on arrival - they have websites and are likely to be open on 2 January. In Australia, the Christmas/New Year period tends to function more normally than in the UK - the warmer weather seems to encourage people out of their homes.

Sorry Shazza87 - that is indeed you, the original poster. It basically means I was too lazy to scroll up and catch your name. Good luck with the migration - the 87 in your name makes me feel so old.

I stayed in the Stellar Hotel last year and it was fantastic. It was about a 5 minute walk from the train and bus terminals, right on the corner of hyde park and oxford street.

If you don't want fancy try the Glenferrie Lodge in Kirribilli, it's like a b&b, they have family rooms a big garden and HUGE breakfast which is included. Very friendly place, but be warned lots of stairs and no lifts!!! But the staff are so helpful they will help carry bags or you could ask for a ground floor room if you book. It's handy for the ferry at Kirribilli Wharf and the train at Milsons Point
