Teaching dream has ended!

In WA, where I believe the OP wants to teach, Early Childhood Teachers in schools work from Kindy level up to Year Three.

They do not work from birth to 2 (which the OP said is required), unless they are based in a child care centre. There is often a shortage in child care centres because the salary is so poor, hence the availability of jobs I suppose.

Hi Helen

Firstly, wait until your skills assessment comes back to see how your qualifications and experience are assessed, this will lead the way on your application. Secondly, the SOL list and the state sponsorship lists change all the time, plus there may be further changes as of July 1st when the new financial year starts, then you will be able to assess which visa options are viable for you. For now, just sit tight and await the outcome of your skills assessment x

xlornax - Thank you so much for your support...it may have sounded different to them but I really don't think any of my posts deserved the responses I got.....I feel bullied and yes was ready for leaving the forum but its such a hive of information that I've decided to stay...Thanks again and no doubt I'll have some more horrid responses. x

Hi Helynn

It it shame that you felt bullied as that's not nice for anyone. From an objective point of view, as has been stated, typed words can come across very different to how they're meant. People were just after clarification about your posts so they could offer advice - as you're fully aware of your situation, they may not have seemed confusing to you as obviously you know exactly what's going on but to an outsider it wasn't that clear. I think your response re Spanish inquisition etc could well have come across as a bit 'bullish' when you genuinely may not have intended that at all. Like yourself I haven't been on this forum that long but have found the support and advice has been invaluable especially when posters are doing it off their own back and in their own time.

It's definitely worth staying on especially as you're so early on in the process and want to do it without an agent - this forum is really useful for advice and support and I think a lot of people would be a bit lost without it (I know I would!)

Best of luck with your application and hopefully you'll be able to find a way forward in your teaching dream

Please report any posts felt to be out of order. Mods can't see everything all the time so if a personal attack or some such is made, report it so we can take a look.

As it is I've removed the comments in question now.

Crickey this is the Spanish inquisition!! I think if you looks closely at my reply you will see that I have answered most of your questions but just incase you really are finding it difficult to understand and I feel you clearly all are: -

I have a 4 years honours degree

I then have a PGDE NOT PGCE which is a higher ranking qualification than the PGCE as it is a full diploma and not certificate in PRIMARY EDUCATION....it covers the 3-18 curriculum and yes I can teach in secondary as well as I can specialise in specific subjects if I have experience of this!

I am currently teaching a year 1 class at the moment and have taught in the early years for 3 years.

I applied to AITSL 2 weeks ago

I wish to teach any stage up to Year 6 in OZ but would prefer infants!

Hope this is clears everything up!!

I doubt the PGDE is higher ranking than the PGCE (England) as it seems there was just a renaming process a few years ago. It appears to have a 50/50 school/uni breakdown. New graduates from the Schools Based approach have been rejected by Aus because not enough time was in Uni course work.

The key will be whether your qualification comprises a set number of hours in class and a set number at uni. Also, the states are very nitpicky about how many hours you have spent on particular subject areas. You'll only know when you get your assessment back. That's only step one though - as others have said, there's a huge oversupply of local primary teachers so getting a job will be yet another challenge. I'd be surprised if it was on any list given the number of young Aussie teachers who can't get jobs.

Quoll is absolutely correct. The course must be university based and with the required number of days spent on prac (supervised teaching).

To teach a secondary subject here, a certain number of hours must have been spent on the subject and units officially gained.

So it is very unlikely that a one year teaching qualification (which the OP has obtained in primary education) would qualify her to teach both primary and secondary here - our education system simply does not work that way.

Right now many primary teachers in WA are undertaking study via a one year course, as the year 7's transition to high school for the first time next year.

This means that lots of primary teachers will lose their jobs, hence the reason the education department is funding the courses to enable primary teachers to be qualified to teach maths, science and design and technology (need areas) at secondary level.

If early childhood is the only option and if it is now stipulated that birth to two must be studied, then a solution is to do some some more study.

I should point out though that in WA it is not required for teachers in schools to have birth to two experience, this would possibly relate to child care centres.

Hi all,

Yes, Primary School Teacher 241213 is still on the CSOL, towards the bottom of the list. I think the main problem is the fact that it is on the CSOL means that you need state sponsorship. Only a few states have it on their lists, and all but one (Victoria) need you to have a job offer. Victoria needs you to be able to teach certain languages.

Hope this helps!
