Hi Everyone

Im a Infant Primary School Teacher who is really disheartened because my dream of getting to OZ has became impossible!!! I am totally gutted as Ive been planning this for the past 2 years and now Im at the stage where I have the experience the money and the qualifications to do this..........I cant even apply for an Early Childhood Teacher as they need me to have experience in birth - 2 room which I dont have.......I cant believe that this has happened....anyone in the same position or have any advice for me.

Thanks in advance!

You either need to spend the time properly qualifying as a primary school teacher, or trying to get work in a nursery to build your experience. If you really want to come to Australia I'd focus on the nursery as teaching jobs are scarce. But you will be paid much less in a nursery.

Qualifications are different in Australia and if you want to work in Child care then despite any degree you have you need to take the relevant certificates that are required to look after pre school children. There are separate degrees here for primary school and early childhood so your qualifications need to match.

If you still wanted to come over you would have to look up the TAFE course and see what you need to do to get those qualifications.

Working in a child care centre is not well paid here so it has to be for love not money.

Thanks for the responses but I know that qualifications are different in OZ and my UK qualifications and experience are well matched for OZ! i have matched all qualifications with AITSL! So I qualify to teach in OZ.....

Sorry, but your posts on here make no sense at all.

You say that 'you can teach them all 3 - 18'. Just what is it that you can teach?

At the beginning of this month you said you were getting the documents together to send off for AITSL approval. Now you are saying that you have matched their requirements and are qualified to teach in Oz.

Have you actually even applied to them? It would be an extremely quick turnover if they have already come back to you and approved you. Most people wait around 11 weeks.

Do you have four years of tertiary education? This can be a four year teaching degree or a three year degree followed by a university based PGCE. If not, then of course no, you cannot teach in Australia.

Either you are eligible or not. Either you have applied to AITSL and been approved, or not

To be an early childhood teacher in a school in Australia you do not need birth to age two experience. Many teachers here are early child and primary trained as more and more degrees combine the two. If you are a child care worker in a child care centre then of course it is different.

There is a solution for you if you do not have the relevant qualifications - more study.

Please could you clarify as your post is very inconsistent.

Hi all

Sorry for the confusion..but I am a Primary teacher who has 3 years experience teaching. I am an infant teacher who can teach from the ages 3-18. I have applied to AITLS and am awaiting approval but as far as qualification matching goes I meet all of AITSL Criteria. I have PGDE which is a diploma and not a certificate in primary education and also have an honours degree. I have applied for an early childhood teacher and have been told that from 1st January 2014 you need to have your skills assessed by another authority called ACECQA and after filling this form in yesterday reached the part where you do need to have birth-2 experience to even be considered for assessment. I am on the offlist on most states with only WA having me available but on a schedule 2 where I do need to have a job offer.......Hope this clarifies all your questions...I was only looking for some answers.....

Hey Helen,

I know you have answered some of these questions but if you just reply and check them off then people may be able to help and offer advice :) Hopefully not too repetitive but people are clearly confused regarding some of the details.

Do you have a straight degree (3 years-BA, BSc) in any particular subject:

Do you have a PGCE:

If so is it a primary or a secondary PGCE:

Are you currently teaching:

What age are you teaching:

How long have you been teaching:

What sort of teaching do you wish to do in Australia:

When did you apply to AITSL:

I know these are a little simplistic and honestly I am aware it could be a little patronising but if you answer then people should be able to give you some answers :)

Crickey this is the Spanish inquisition!! I think if you looks closely at my reply you will see that I have answered most of your questions but just incase you really are finding it difficult to understand and I feel you clearly all are: -

I have a 4 years honours degree

I then have a PGDE NOT PGCE which is a higher ranking qualification than the PGCE as it is a full diploma and not certificate in PRIMARY EDUCATION....it covers the 3-18 curriculum and yes I can teach in secondary as well as I can specialise in specific subjects if I have experience of this!

I am currently teaching a year 1 class at the moment and have taught in the early years for 3 years.

I applied to AITSL 2 weeks ago

I wish to teach any stage up to Year 6 in OZ but would prefer infants!

Hope this is clears everything up!!

Sorry, was just trying to get it all in one place for the experts to help you :) They will be able to give a much stronger answer than me.

So you seem to have what you need to apply for a PR visa as a teacher. Primary or secondary. Could you not do it this way and apply under that code and then secure a teaching job once in Oz? As opposed to applying under the early years code which has caused you the problems?

Just blue sky thinking :)

That is a very good point, but the OP's teaching qualification is in primary education. It is highly unlikely that she would have studied enough units to qualify as a secondary teacher here and therefore could not teach 3 - 18 years of age.

Each teaching registration board in Australia has very particular requirements in regards to the number of units that must be studied to teach a subject. The 'ability' to teach a subject does not qualify a primary teacher to teach secondary.

Australia's teaching requirements are very exacting so people do need to have the exact information to be able to help. A migration agent would need the same info. Getting impatient with people who are trying to help you is counterproductive.

Saying that, I agree with vanduex's idea. Apply under the primary code if you can.

True. Plus I can't see Primary teacher on the SOL and CSOL. Have they been off for ages or is this a new development? (not really up to date with what is on and what is off) I can see the early years teacher code and this may be where the problem is coming from as there is a specific requirement that Helynn doesn't meet perhaps?

Can you see the code? I may be blind or stupid but I can't find primary teacher. Hope to be corrected.

There is an over supply of primary teachers here - thousands without jobs. So it may well be that that they are not on any lists right now.
