Teachers Moving or Living in Australia

For Queensland have a look at Smart Jobs for teaching jobs in the public sector (you can filter it down so you don't end up with every job in QLD!).

https://smartjobs.qld.gov.au/

Also Tracer is good if you want supply work initially.

http://education.qld.gov.au/hr/recruitment/teaching/tracer/

Lots of Private Schools advertise on Seek.com.

If you have any contacts at schools in the area you want to teach in, it's always worth seeing if they can help - building a rapport can sometimes go a long way when looking for jobs!

Good luck

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and have some questions regarding finding a teaching job if anyone can help.

I'm a native French speaker but I have been teaching in the UK for 10 years (French/German teacher).

Visa SI/189 was granted on 04/05/16 and I am now looking for a job in Oz.

Does anyone know how easy it is to find a French teaching job out there? I would actually go where I can find a post to start with.

Would you register to get the teacher accreditation before you apply for any job or after when you actually get a job offer?

I'd like to start in January 2017.

Any suggestions welcome!

In Nsw there seems to be mostly jobs for French. It seems to be the most popular out here in terms of European languages. I am an MFL teacher too, but I teach Italian Spanish (any level) and ks3 French.

Have a look on teachers.net a lot of jobs come up there. I am currently looking for a new job too as I am on a contract still December. I think during term 4 there will be more jobs posted, at least I hope. Bonne chance !

Good news, I have had my teaching registration approved for QLD. I wanted to see if anyone has had any experience of Smart Teachers and been successful finding work through them or if it better to serach and find the jobs through other methods. TIA

We've been here just over 2 years. I got my first contract job in the Catholic sector through their website within 6 weeks of being here. Right place right time! That lasted for 5 terms. I've then had 2 one term contracts through Smart Teachers. The local experience from the first job really helped. Good luck!

I registered for both smart teachers and Anzuk and had several interviews before arriving in Australia. I got two job offers from my first two interviews and was employed before I arrived. I will point out though that I am regional (still at the coast) and my subject is shortage. I also receive regular emails from both companies with interviews offers for other roles. They are quite good.

I've already posted this question once on these forums, so I apologise if I'm going to sound like a broken record....but want to ask again to be completely sure. (I'm making a big decision next week!)

Has anyone successfully passed the skills assessment to become a SEN Teacher? I know there was someone on these forums (Leah?) who did a PG Cert SENCO after her BEd and it was accepted. However, I don't have a BEd - I have a 3 year BSc in Psychology. I'm applying to do a PGCE next week and thankfully have dodged a bullet by NOT choosing a School's direct, over a traditional PGCE thanks to the advice given here.

I've found 4 courses in the UK that offer a traditional PGCE with Special Educational Needs. I think I will need to do a Masters on top of this to qualify, according to the gov website. I don't think the SEN part of the PGCE will be accepted.

However, now I'm worrying in case this PGCE will not be accepted by Aus because it may concern less modules than a PGCE without SEN. I know it sounds ridiculous, but Aus seems so anal on transcripts and modules covered.

I would just to hear from anyone who have has their qualifications (BA/BSc + PGCE + MA?) accepted...and is now a SEN Teacher in Aus.

Thank you.

Have you thought about doing Ed Psych as a Masters? There are usually positions to be found as School Counsellors or Guidance officers (depends on the state) and they are often school based rather than office based (again, depends on the state). Great work and probably better than SEN unless you are passionate about SEN

Hi Christina, welcome! You need to be positive. when I got here it took me ages to get registred as my degree is from Italy so I had to sit English tests. I am a high school teacher. 3 months after I registred I got a 1 year contract starting last January and I just got renewed. Most jobs come out between October and now though. when do you arrive? Situation here for work in Sydney is slow compared to the Uk, but with perseverance and a bit of luck you should be fine. Don't expect permanent jobs either.

I have a Psychology of Education MEd (BPS doctorate route way) Does this mean in theory I could be a School Psych in Oz? My first degree was Business!

Probably not - the expectation is that you have 4 years (it may be 5 now, I'm out of the loop) of psychology in order to be registered with AHPRA and most states want registration for their school psychs so if your first degree was Psych then yes you would be register able and quite likely find a job - because the psych/teaching qualifications are getting a bit too hard to find some states are a little more flexible. Getting AHPRA registration would be your stumbling block there.

I'm new to this forum so I just wanted to say hello!

My husband and I are hoping to head to Brisbane next year (if all goes well with Visas!) along with our baby girl.

I am currently a full-time drama teacher and HOD and would ideally like to work within this subject though I know that it's not a subject in demand. I also have SEND and English experience though my degree and PGCE are in drama.

Out of curiosity, how easy/difficult is it to pick up supply/short-term work in this part of Australia?

Thanks in advance

i am just worried that my cash won't last until I get a job :(

i am coming out at the end of May as that is the only time I can leave my job here in the UK! Am hoping to register to work there with the NSW Gov before I come out so that the process is quicker! Understand that jobs there are not normally permanent and will start applying before o leave Uk!

Supposw if I can't find a teaching job I could do sow thing else to start with! Any advice on the application process?

What type of visa are you coming on?

NSW no longer sponsors visas for primary school teachers as the profession is very over subscribed. You will be arriving mid year so hopefully you can pick up some supply work to gain some local experience before recruiting for 2018 starts in earnest in about October 2017. There is a degree of luck involved and you may have an opportunity to impress a school whilst doing supply work which might lead to a longer term contract.

Sydney is is one of the world's most expensive cities so make sure you have funds behind you and polish up polish up any other skills you have. The good news is that unemployment is relatively lower in Sydney. Have a look around the forum for suggestions of lower priced areas to live and work which will make the move less stressful financially.

i hate to sound so negative but the competition is fierce both from new arrivals and the thousands of unemployed teaching graduates - be ready to hit the ground running. Hopefully the excitement of the adventure will outweigh that initial uncertainty when you arrive.

Hi

I wondered if anyone could offer me some advice regarding Special Educational Needs Teachers in Victoria...I am a UK primary teacher and SENCo with over 15 year's experience (plus a higher level SEN qualification). I am planning to have my skills assessed as a Special Needs Teacher and wondered how easy it is to get a special education job around Melbourne. Also, is there a job in Australia equivalent to SENCo?

I would appreciate any advice from teachers who have experience working in the SEN field in Oz. Thanks in advance.

Karen :-)

Hi Everyone!

Great posts here, and some very interesting timelines to get 189 granted!

I'm a secondary maths teacher (specialised 4 year degree)

I'm here on a WHV year 1, and have just posted my AITSL for a 189 visa

IELTS book first weekend in January - I need a score of 8 to get me 60 points as I have no paid experience

I have my EOI filled out to the point of needing my skills assessment so hopefully all going to plan I can have that lodged as soon as I receive my AITSL positive

Basically my WHV ends in March and I know I am really pushing it for time, but just wondering what any of you experienced people may think

I'm in Perth at the minute - is my position in demand? -Is obtaining an overall 8 in IELTS a tough feat? -Did you teachers wait long for invites?

All help and opinions welcomed and appreciated
