Teachers Moving or Living in Australia

I have recently resigned from being HoD (Music) after 14 years in a secondary school and with 19 years experience. We have our visas but had to apply for an additional visa for our second child which we now have . We are looking to move out to Brisbane area mid November as my husband wants to complete 12 months in his current job. We have 2 children who will be 4 & 2 by the time we arrive and we are planning on me not working in the first instance and my husband being the sole income! Our visa is based on my qualifications and is a permanent visa. I will want to work in the near future and wondered what I need to do to prepare for this and where I should look. Any help would be welcomed

Science teachers(+ manual arts) on shortage list in secondary and shortage planned to exacerbate - Prospects very good, especially rural/remote - plum locations are snapped up of course but you're in the best teaching subject for work - you may be expected to teach maths as well

Hi everyone,

Need advice about job prospects for a chemistry teacher in Melbourne. I have been granted 189 visa, have completed NQT year in UK and worked as a supply/relief due to lack of permanent roles, but don't enjoy supply work. What are the prospects for getting full time or part time work in Melbourne / outer suburbs?

thanks

Very good. Both subjects, physics in particular, are constantly in demand and experienced teachers are sought after. I am in this area so happy to help with other questions.

Anyone know if biology teachers also in demand, or is it mainly the other sciences and maths? I'm planning on training as a teacher in Australia but can only train in biology methods, maybe general science if I up my chemistry (this despite having an MSc and PhD in social science - madness!).We'll be in north-east vic.

Never watched it but will one day. Hoped someone might have got the reference - still uncertain about the move.

Hi everyone,

Quick general question - do schools offer the option of interviewing for a permanent post by Skype? We're hoping that I'll secure a job before we fly out, but teaching full time in the UK means we can only plan a recce/visa validation/interview trip during the the UK school holidays and these dates don't seem to tie in with the main times for interviewing in Oz :(

Thanks.

Morning!

Just joined, this is my first post. Things moving very quickly this end.

I have 7 years experience teaching Maths up to A Level (my preference). Anyone on here transferred from UK A level to Australia? I have had a quick look at the exam papers and there is Mechanics mixed in with the Pure/Core. I can only teach Statistics & FP1 as well as Pure/Core. Do the students get different teachers for these different topics as they do over here or would I be expected to be able to teach the Mechanics elements too?

Hoping to move to Sydney Sept 1st (ish) if company can get a wiggle on with the 186 visa.

Hi

it depends on the school but as I understand, NSW really scrutinise transcripts so they will most likely decide which specialist areas you are qualified to work within.

New south wales, I got this from Wikipedia

General Mathematics (2 unit): A basic mathematics course containing precalculus concepts, the course is heavily based on practical mathematics used in everyday life.[1]

  • Mathematics (2 unit): An advanced level course based on Calculus also with detailed study in trigonometry, curve sketching and other complex algebraic disciplines such as locus. It is the highest level non-extension mathematics course.[2]

  • Mathematics Extension 1 (1 unit): A more advanced course building on concepts in calculus, trigonometry, polynomials and basic combinatorics. Mathematics must also be studied in conjunction with this course.[2]

  • Mathematics Extension 2 (1 unit): A highly advanced mathematics course containing an introduction to Complex Numbers, Advanced Calculus & Curve Sketching, advanced Polynomials, Mechanics, Conics and Harder Mathematics Extension 1 topics. Mathematics (2 unit) and Mathematics Extension 1 must also be studied in conjunction with this course, however students are not directly assessed on Mathematics (2 unit) material.[3]
  • In Queensland
  • Generally they are taught as subjects Maths A, B and C

Maths A is general non complex mostly middle school content applied
Maths B is primarily statistics and calculus, derivatives, integration etc
Maths C tends to have vectors, dynamics, matrices etc

Hello, I hope you don't mind me asking a question.

I am considering two postgraduate courses at the moment. Which do you think has better job prospects; an Early childhood teacher/High School English teacher?

Also, the English teacher PGCE only qualifies to teach up to age 16. Is this a problem in Oz?

Many thanks.

First of all you have to decide what you would prefer to do as a career. However I believe an English PGCE would be a good option. We read on here teachers on here who struggle to get their qualifications recognised in early childhood or work in a nursery where wages are lower. It seems a bit of a minefield but maybe that's my naivety?!

Hi,

I'm tallying up the points I would currently be awarded to be able to submit an EOI:

Age 38: 25

BA in Music: 15

Superior English IELTS: 20 (I have not yet taken the test but I would want - perhaps need - to aim for this outcome).

This would give me the minimum of 60 required.

My question is, do I get any more points for possessing a PGCE? Am I missing anything else that could yield extra points? (I am an NQT so will not be awarded points for experience yet).

Any advice warmly welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

I think the 60 will be your max but at least you have enough to apply. I'm in the same position as you with points as I'm just completing my NQT. Was hoping to have skills assessment back sooner as it's my 33rd Birthday in July and would have been able to claim 30 points for age if I was invited to apply before my birthday but it looks as if it's not meant to be. Will still have the magic 60 points though so not too worried. Good luck, I'm sure you'll still get an invite with 60 points x

I've only got 18 months until I'm 40 so need to get a shift on really! Think I will take IELTS this summer and AITSL assessment. Do induction year then submit EOI in July 2016 when I'll be 39 years and 7 months old eek.

Need to get superior English IELTS first though! Best get revising :) x

I'd suggest getting a move on these things seem to take forever! Remember your AITSL and IELTS are valid for 2 years and you can have your visa for 5 years before making a permanent move (you need to validate it in the first 12 months from your medicals or Pcc). Plus you never know when things will be taken off the SOL X

Apologies for the flurry of questions over the past 48 hours! Trying to prepare for starting the process formally.

I am about to embark on my first post after my PGCE this September and will be completing my induction year. Assuming I get a positive AITSL assessment, am I able to apply for a 189 whilst I am completing my NQT induction year or do I have to wait until it is done at the end of the school year? TIA.
