Cant decide what dog to get and need insperation and possible personal experience please, I need a dog or bitch that is energetic and needs to keep going for at least a mile run with me, needs to be good with kids (sisters) likes swimming, has to be loyal and intelligent with a happy disposition, this is my short list.

A Staffordshire bull terrier . People can say what they like but a well trained socialised one fits everything you've said. Well some of them don't like swimming..

I like staffies and unfortunately they are the the most abandoned dog in the UK :embarrassed:

Yep! They get passed around owners a lot. My mum was going to get one before she picked her jack Russell pup, says she should of went with her first choice

Staffies definitely match your description, ours could walk for hours when they were better health wise. Otherwise I would say a spaniel or something like that

I don't like any of those pitbull type of dogs.

No dog can be 100% trusted. Our dog is only with our kids under our supervision even though he's a big softie. The kids interact through the baby gates and when in the garden (when one of us is outside with them) or in the front room if we are there. When the adult leaves the room the dog does too.

I don't leave our son (now 4) with our dog on his own either xx

Had a few different breed of dogs over the years, 3 that are on your list.....collie, labs, spaniel.

All three of those breeds have been great, but matching them with your list of wishes I would say its between collie and lab.

You wouldn't go wrong with either tbh but as the poster above says you can never fool a collie, you will be kept on your toes. Labs while still v intelligent are a bit more happy with their own company as such, they will see any period of separation as a good old excuse to take a nap...

So just on that basis...I'm voting lab..

I can't see the poll if you've got one but we've got a Beagle and he is the most adorable loving dog I've ever known. We got him when our son was 2 and he's been amazing. X

I had a search and they are apparently quite hard to train as the general consensus is that they are not as intelligent as a lot of dogs.

My friends Lab is crazy and spins round. He hit me so hard once (while spinning) that I had a massive bruise on my knee for weeks it hurt so much! Lol he only did it cos he was excited but if that was a child he would have knocked them clean over and done some damage. I love labs but they do get over excited and they can grow big lol xx

Lol all beagles are clever. It's the ignorance that makes people think they are stupid i.e. if he was to run off I don't know if he would come back because he follows his nose. But they aren't stupid. People who don't have them say that but everyone I know and I know a lot of people with Beagles that have had no problems training them. We haven't ours lol x

We looked at epupz when we were looking for dogs. They've got a lot of information on there about breeds xx

True but a dog that has the strength to easily kill a child is even more a concern.

Particularly the breeds that can clamp their jaws with incredible strength and not let go.

Pitbulls are mostly banned in Victoria now.

Did I say a pit bull?! I said staffie. Yes they are brilliant with children if they are brought up with them. Same as any other dog. Shouldn't leave your kids alone with any dog
