Parley
I have a border collie who is full of energy and just loves to run. She is a lovely natured dog too. The only thing I don't like is the amount of hair she sheds around the house.

A Staffordshire bull terrier . People can say what they like but a well trained socialised one fits everything you've said. Well some of them don't like swimming.. zk2102
We have a collie. You'll always need to be on your toes though because they will always try to outwit you. Not a breed for the faint hearted .
Guest51810
I like staffies and unfortunately they are the the most abandoned dog in the UK :embarrassed: Yep! They get passed around owners a lot. My mum was going to get one before she picked her jack Russell pup, says she should of went with her first choice  Staffies definitely match your description, ours could walk for hours when they were better health wise. Otherwise I would say a spaniel or something like that
Tappers2oz
We have a collie cross, bright as they come but daft as a brush at the same time lol! Very very energetic. Great with the kids. :-)

Perthbum
Boxer I like boxers but from what I have read dont like swimming or running that much.
Parley
Unfortunately Staffies can be very dangerous, so I personally would not go for one of them if you are going to be around kids.
Parley
BTW, Collie and Border Collie are different breeds so should be split in your poll.
Counting Stars
I can't see the poll if you've got one but we've got a Beagle and he is the most adorable loving dog I've ever known. We got him when our son was 2 and he's been amazing. X
Tappers2oz
but can they be trusted with kids ?I don't like any of those pitbull type of dogs. No dog can be 100% trusted. Our dog is only with our kids under our supervision even though he's a big softie. The kids interact through the baby gates and when in the garden (when one of us is outside with them) or in the front room if we are there. When the adult leaves the room the dog does too. Parley
True but a dog that has the strength to easily kill a child is even more a concern. Particularly the breeds that can clamp their jaws with incredible strength and not let go. Pitbulls are mostly banned in Victoria now. fifi69
Had a few different breed of dogs over the years, 3 that are on your list.....collie, labs, spaniel. All three of those breeds have been great, but matching them with your list of wishes I would say its between collie and lab. You wouldn't go wrong with either tbh but as the poster above says you can never fool a collie, you will be kept on your toes. Labs while still v intelligent are a bit more happy with their own company as such, they will see any period of separation as a good old excuse to take a nap... So just on that basis...I'm voting lab..

X I had a search and they are apparently quite hard to train as the general consensus is that they are not as intelligent as a lot of dogs. http://www.infodogs.co.uk/dog-breeds/breed/beagle
Counting Stars
My friends Lab is crazy and spins round. He hit me so hard once (while spinning) that I had a massive bruise on my knee for weeks it hurt so much! Lol he only did it cos he was excited but if that was a child he would have knocked them clean over and done some damage. I love labs but they do get over excited and they can grow big lol xx

Perthbum
Golden retriever :-) Nice dogs but not that active I have heard compared to a lot of dogs, I need a dog that will run for a long time.

It's the ignorance that makes people think they are stupid i.e. if he was to run off I don't know if he would come back because he follows his nose. But they aren't stupid. People who don't have them say that but everyone I know and I know a lot of people with Beagles that have had no problems training them. We haven't ours lol x We looked at epupz when we were looking for dogs. They've got a lot of information on there about breeds xx Edited January 20, 2014 by Counting Stars

Shouldn't leave your kids alone with any dog
Counting Stars
http://www.epupz.co.uk/dogdetails.asp?breed=Beagle Obviously all other breeds on there too. We picked Beagles because of their loving nature. They are the most tested on dog breed because of their temprement. Not good for them but means their personality is perfect for children x
