Hi

i am just about to start on my cost of living and relocation statement to canberra, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice or send me a template to work from. Maybe too much chocolate or wine over Christmas but my brain has turned to mush and can't seem to get it off the ground.

Hi - I'm an Aussie so I don't know anything about the format of the statement you need to make however these links might help with the type of information you need.

This one is populated by people living in the area - it gives an average cost of things as well as a band width.

http://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/city_result.jsp?country=Australia&city=Canberra

I assume you will be renting to start off so this link provides a listing of property currently available. Due to its proximity to Canberra properties in the Queanbeyan area are also listed however Queanbeyan is part of NSW rather than the ACT.

Hope that helps a bit.

That cost of living link is pretty good :) I also made sure to compare the cost of living (it's HIGH) to my expected income, to make it clear that although it costs us a lot more comparatively to live here than it did in the UK, we are also paid better and therefore better off overall... good luck!

in addition, for food check http://www.woolworths.com.au and http://www.coles.com.au, for clothing and household items http://www.target.com.au, http://www.bigw.com.au or http://www.kmart.com.au for utilities and such http://www.acewagl.com.au. Or if you can manage to get your hands on on a Sydney one, it is comparable. What we did is to we made a spreadsheet of our expenses in the UK and looked up the items on these websites. Plug it in. Oh and add flight/relocation costs. For shipping estimates try http://www.sevenseas.com. Good luck and have fun!

Hi chris,

my advice to u is that u don`t have to overanalyze this matter ... just collect some ballmark figure from numbeo and from searching threads in this forum... before I did my nomination I prepared a word document for the "cost of leaving in canberra statement" and did extensive research... when I was submitting the actual nomination online I figured u have a fixed number of letter allowed for this so called statement... so a typical template goes like this :

Rent : 2000

food : 700

insurance : 100

Internet service: 60

...etc

and the list can`t be too long or u will exceed the number of letters allowed to u

However, i should also tell u that the research u make will benefit YOU in the future and u will feel more aware of the costs and have realistic expectations

It is not just to have the statement submitted but also to have a real idea how much will he spend. So it is your best personal interest to spend time on this and make a BUDGET you will also use when you arrive in Canberra. Most people make the mistake of underestimating these costs.
