‘G’day’ everyone!

My partner is a paediatric nurse and we’re hoping to make the move early next year from Cardiff. In light of this we have some questions that will hopefully be answered by those who are already working in Oz hospitals... so here we go...

There are some fairly significant differences in salaries and shift allowances between the different states, so in order to determine whether this will affect our decision as to where to live we’d like to know what the typical shift patterns are for nurses? I.e. how many Night shifts you do, Weekends etc etc. In particular, it would be good to hear from nurses in QLD, NSW and WA hospitals.

Also, it’s fairly easy to determine from the websites of NSW & QLD health what salary bracket my partner will fall into but for WA it looks a little bit more complicated with:

RN 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and so on

RN 2.1, 2.2 etc etc

And SRN 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

She’s a band 5 in the UK with what will be 6 years experience by the time we arrive, what level is she likely to achieve in WA??

Thanks in advance for your help and advice

Hi guys!

I'm sure this has prob been asked a million times before but I can't seem to find the answer lol!

I'm a band 6 RMN currently working within substance misuse in the uk

Im hoping to come out to Oz initially for 12 months next September ish! I've looked at signing up with an agency such as geneva but wasn't sure if it's best to sort a job out myself?? What are people's views on this?

Also I will be qualified for 10 years by the time I come out and am looking at possibly cairns to live and work. Can you point me in the right direction as to where I can find a salary indicator please?

Thanking you muchley!!

Hi Mags

Im new to site and was wondering if nurses thread also includes midwives??!!

I have been a midwife for 9 years and am hoping to move to WA within the next year!! Still in very early stages of applying. I am married with two children - a boy who is 4 and a daughter comming up to 4 months old!!!

Anyone know when you get in touch with NMC about your certificate of registration status, is it before or after you send your application to APHRA??

Good luck to everyone

Hi Sian

If you are sending your application within the next few months I'd get on with the process of getting the NMC to send verification. They aren't very quick! Took weeks and several phone calls to the NMC before I got the paperwork and then it was about 2 months after I returned the paperwork that they informed me that they had sent the verification to AHPRA!

Hi, they have managed to contact one of my referees so far, did they tell you which visa to apply for or did you sort it out yourself?? I guess PR does make more sense as i have children too but when i read the Ramsay website it sort of suggested that they help you with the 457 so i was a bit confused. Good luck with your move, i can't wait to get out there.

Hi everyone,

I have finally qualified!!! YAY!!! My husband has finally come round to emigrating and have booked to stay with friends in Brisbane in October next year.

How is nursing in Australia compared to the UK? At the moment NHS is horrid and getting worse each day with bed blockages, lack of staff and even more NHS cuts with wards closing down means extra pressure on wards that are open. It is getting unsafer by the minute to nurse here now?

Any advice would be fantastic xx

Hi everyone,

I'm really struggling to find out what information I need to get together for my Skills Assessment. I have all the paperwork, but I only have a few months work experience in the last 5 years. I have enough to maintain my registration in the UK - what is the minimum they're looking for in Australia?

Also, what information will my employer be asked to provide? Just a reference? Or will they be asked to assess my skills?

I feel like I'm looking in all the wrong places - struggling to find the info I need.

Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

I am a UK nurse, heading out in february with my family, to Geelong area. I have my AHPRA registration in place already, and a PR visa, but am having difficulty finding a job. I was offered one in Melbourne, but this is too far to travel daily.

I have 8 years post graduate experience, and am getting worried now i won't be able to get a job, really wanted to get one set up before i arrive.

Any suggestions on where else to try would be great. I am registered with Barwon health, Ballarat health, and Vital agency. Thanks all.

Hi, have you tried seek.com.au or tried contacting the local hospitals with an expression of interest?

Hi there, I've gotten a job through plexus medical and they are based in melbourne. I've found them super efficient friendly and above all very professional. My family and i are hoping to be in Melbourne before the start of new school year just waiting for AHPRA to get a move on with my registration! I;m going out on a 457 visa and praying everything is what it seems , always a little nervous as you hear some horror stories:shocked:. Have a full time Practice nurse position and can't wait to go over. Have a lookj at plexus I've found them great I have to say !

Not sure if this has been answered so forgive me if i'm repeating myself! You do not need to sit an english exam for APHRA if you can prove you studied and were examined in english for (A) secondary level education and (B) your nurse training was through English. AHPRA do a skills assessment when you apply to register. Their application form is fairly straight forward but very detailed. I;m qualified for the last 18 years so had a lot of information and proving of experience to do . Took me a while to go through their requiremnts and made some mistakes on the first form so if you have any specific questions ask away!! Although my registration is still pending but they are known to be slow and I only applied 07/10/2011.

:arghh: How frustrating and emotinally challenging are AHPRA?

In a nutshell I submitted my application to AHPRA in April; in June the money was taken out of my account. On 24th August I received an email requesting further information from university (in depth transcripts etc). Paid £92 to university for said transcripts which have been sent and tracked to AHPRA by the university. This week I tried to email the person who requested the information but when i try to reply it defaults to another name. Ok so maybe the original person has left? The reason i need to contact AHPRA is to explain that my academic documents and the requested in depth transcript will be in a previous name, because i'm sure they won't be able to make the connection even though they have a copy of my marriage certificate. At the moment I'm trying to convince myself that if I pay the university another £92 and ask them to send again in my married name, it will satisfy AHPRA, but my emotions are constantly on a roller coaster. What's even more frustrating is I have the offer of a job but can't get the visa until I have my registration.

i realise that other nurses have had to go through similar experiences and applaud them for their commitment but I'm begining to wonder if it's all worth it.

Apologies for the rant

Hi Fluffyhead, sorry to hear of the trouble you are having. I wouldn't pay another £92 just yet. I think you should give AHPRA a call, ask to be put through to the office where you sent your documents and ask for a manager. From what I've read on here you have to be incredibly persistant with them, pester them even! And for most this seems to work with people receiving their registration days later. It'll be worth it in the end

We sent my partners application off mid September and although we received notification that they've received it, no money has been taken yet. It's hard when you want something so bad but there is something so out of control in your way. Hope you get some good news soon. Mat

Hi all,

Sorry to hear so many people have had problems with AHPRA. I was expecting the same but mine has been sorted out really quickly, it only took a month from sending in the UK. I was really surprised, which means I have to leave the UK sooner than I was planning. AHPRA aren't all bad!

Hi Tracey which AHPRA did u send it too? Most on here with problems seem to be sending it to Sydney, I sent mine to Melbourne. Sent on 7/10/2011 acknowledged on 10/10/2011 additional information requested , sent and then received on 10/11/2011. Ever hopeful they will sort it out by end of nov and I can get visa sorted befor Xmas.... Wishful thinking??? Maybe I'll ask Santa ;)
