beefz88 10 Posted May 6, 2013 i am 25 years old and coming over to the perth area in july on a working holiday visa with my Mrs . I am reading different things about what i will need to do to work as a spark. I was a general domestic/commercial spark through my apprentership but the last 2 years i have been working on substations (industrial). what recognized qualifications do i need to do when i get out there, a licence? can i do it in the UK before i go. i need someone just to clear this whole thing up for me, costs, time frames. will i find it easy to get work out there and is there plenty of companies that can sponsor? thanks in advance Danny
calNgary 9,134 Posted May 7, 2013 Hi These links may answer some of your questions for you . You may be better looking into a skilled PR visa rather than relying on sponsership which id imagine is even harder to get without Aus experience or licences. http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/energysafety/Content/Licensing/index.h http://www.cet.asn.au/faq.aspx If you don't go after what you want, you'll never have it. If you don't ask, the answer is always no. If you don't step forward, you're always in the same place... If you get a chance, take it, If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said it would be easy they just said it would be worth it...
colinmaclec 310 Posted May 8, 2013 First you have to apply for an ARTC which will take at least a month or two and you can only do this when you reside in Australia. You have to apply to energy safety for a provisional license($150) which then allows you to book on to the gap training which begins with 2 weeks at college($2000). Then you fill a log book for up to a year and the college sends you homework to complete. Then you have to do a 4 day communications course with a test at the end( $200). Then you have to sit the capstone which is the same trade test as the Australian apprentices do. After all that you are issued a cert 3 and can apply for your A grade license ($500). It can be hard to get work to fill the logbook without the license, Also a lot of jobs available to gap trainers are not well paid $25-30. That is how it is for Electricians currently. If you are on a holiday visa it is very expensive and time consuming and you will be back in the UK before you complete it tbh.

colinmaclec 310 Posted May 10, 2013 apply to http://www.innovation.gov.au/Skills/SkillsAssessment/TradesRecognitionAustralia/AustralianRecognisedTradeCertificate/Pages/default.aspx. You will have to provide references work history etc. Chances of getting sponsored will be very slim these days as well.
