Juliamj1 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 Looking at moving from Perth to Canberra for my husbands job. My daughters are in yr 5 & 7 here but I have a feeling this may be different for my youngest as her birthday is June, I see the age cut off is April in Canberra. She is 9 & year 5 at the moment. Any knowledge shared would be great.
Quoll Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 A June birthday for a kid turning 10 this year would put her in yr 4 as you correctly identify, however you might well be able o negotiate a yr 5 placement as he is moving from another state and kids do that all the time. It's only when they move into the system at first that they are likely to put kids into their chronological year. ACT is surrounded by NSW which has a July cut off and they have kids moving across the border at their same yr level all the time. It might help if you can provide a letter from her current school supporting her current functioning within that age cohort, emotional and social as well as skill level. If OTOH she is a little, immature type kid then this might be a good time for her to take a breather and consolidate - only you know your child.
