Marmy Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Hi all, Have been lurking here for a while before registering today. It seems very friendly here and I've already picked up a lot of good advice. My Wife, little girl and I are thinking about a possible migration from the UK to Australia. We'd most likely be looking at a move to Victoria around the Bairnsdale area as we have some family there. This is all very pie in the sky at the moment and we are hoping to make a trip to Aus soon to get some better idea of things. We're really not sure where to start on this whole process and what is needed. I'm a teacher and would be moving with close to 10 years experience and currently hold a post as a head of department (possibly senior leader by the time we move). My wife is a Solicitor, although she would hope to either work as a legal secretary or re-train to work in Victoria in family law. Our biggest questions I guess are where to start on this journey, what things we need to think about etc for our circumstances or where the best place to look for this information would be. In terms of finances, we'd hope to be moving with around £50,000 - £60,000 Thanks for reading!
Petals Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Welcome to the forum, Bairnsdale is quite a way from Melbourne so will depend if you want the city or the country. Teachers are needed in the country areas more than the city. There are many threads about teaching in Victoria so have a look on the Victoria forum and also the Jobs section of the forum and you will find a lot of information there. Also join up with Life in Victoria there is a link to the forum at the foot of this one.
Del70 Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/ Hi - You've probably already looked at it, but I've put a link to the DIAC website, which will give you information on Visas. Are you intending to be the main applicant, and if so, what subject(s) do you teach? It may affect which state you can work in. Good luck with everything!

We're going to be heading to Aus soon to get a good feel for places; however anywhere between Melbourne -> Orbost seems reasonable for us. Thanks! http://www.immi.gov.au/skills/skillselect/Hi - You've probably already looked at it, but I've put a link to the DIAC website, which will give you information on Visas. Have BSC + PGCE and currently 7+ years of teaching experience (3 1/2 of those as a head of department) Thanks
Guest The Pom Queen Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Welcome to the forum. Have you had a look at the visa wizard http://www.immi.gov.au/visawizard/ this will give you some idea where to start.
blossom Posted April 27, 2013 Posted April 27, 2013 Yes, your first job is to make sure there is a visa for you. Have a look at the visa wizard.

Yes, your first job is to make sure there is a visa for you. Have a look at the visa wizard. Thanks. It seems a 189 or a 489 would be applicable. I've had a look at the necessary points and would be above the minimum points threshold by a comfortable margin
Del70 Posted April 28, 2013 Posted April 28, 2013 As you would be the main applicant, you would have to get your teaching skills assessed by AITSL. They need lots of paperwork, and are currently taking 14 weeks from receipt of documents to process the assessment............ It's a long wait.......! I've included a link below - http://www.aitsl.edu.au/assessment-for-migration/assessment-for-migration.html
Marmy Posted April 28, 2013 Author Posted April 28, 2013 Appreciate all the comments so far. Have given us some thinking to do a place to start our research. Have heard that job prospects for teachers can be tough, although I am guessing working outside of the city can improve those? How does experience in the UK map onto the teachers progression scale. Will they recognise years in service?
