Guest Posted April 10, 2013 Share Posted April 10, 2013 I'm a Mac user and won't go back to Windows (or Linux). Been happy with Apple for years. Its far more intuitive to use than Windows I find. I had to use Windows at my parents for the weekend and was so frustrated by it and hated using it. Not everyone likes Apple but for simplicity and that it just works with minimal fuss, works for me. Got my first Mac (24" iMac) about 5 years ago and its still going strong as our main desktop, although it cost more at the time I'd have gone through 2 PC's in that time and be ready for another. For a job I manage high end servers and I'm well capable of building my own (also have a VMWare box running linux, windows etc etc at home), but for basic "I want a computer to do web, email, video, photo editing etc you can't beat a Mac. Quality is one thing, and its very high*, but the reason I still have mine is it still runs the latest software quickly enough for me. If I'd bought a mid-level PC 5 years ago it would be struggling spec wise to run the latest windows/office etc. Mac's also don't suffer as much from fragmentation/software overload (loads of applications running in background, extra drivers, registry bloat etc). When I had PC's I'd fully re-install them every 18 months or so just to clear them out - I've never had to do this with my Mac. *Even though the quality is good the downside of all-in-one systems is if they do fail they can't be easily taken apart and fixed e.g. if the hard drive fails, its much more specialist - so consider an extended warranty. My non Mac desktop (a Dell PC) is still going strong after 7+ years and no problems. It's operated almost full time as the only computer for 2 users. See my previous email, I wasn't talking about hardware reliability, by far the biggest issue with this is HDD's. I was talking about ability to upgrade to the latest software - try installing windows 8 on your 7 year old Dell & see how it runs. I can run the latest OS/X on my Mac with no noticeable performance hit. If you're happy with XP no need to upgrade, the lack of support will make no difference to you - when did you last log a call with Microsoft? P.S. If budget is important then manufacturer is all the same to me, might aswell go for one that looks good. If you're a gamer you may want to go for a random windows machine. I am an Apple lover, but so many people have recommended them, easy to set up et et ... the only thing I am struggling with is linking it to the hi Fi system, so I have got the guys who installed the hi Fi to pop round again, I don't want to do more damage, I have already accidentally disabled two speakers :chatterbox: and caused other problems ..... Just recently we have started to see issues being highlighted with the HDD so we are swapping it out. Not difficult to do ourselves and pretty cheap. Personally I would not have a Mac as I believe they are way too expensive for what you get. I also find them counter intuitive and awkward to use. On the flip side my OH says the opposite. No, most games don't run on mac OS, and if you run a dual boot windows through bootcamp, there can still be issues. Hardware-wise, imacs have overheating issues when pushed to their limits, which gaming does. If you son wants to game, then I would go with a PC. I've had an imac for 5 years, it was fine for everything except gaming, I mostly used it for photo processing. I did need a new harddrive in it's first year as the original gave up the ghost - luckily still under warranty, the DVD drive isn't happy as of a couple of years ago and makes ominous whirring sounds sometimes, and it's in the last few months started to complain/freeze/run slow. We've relegated it to internet/Skype duty and recently purchased an asus and an hp all in one, as they off much better hardware for the same money - unlike when I bought my imac 5yrs ago where it was the cheapest option if I wanted a 24" screen, as with a PC I'd have needed to buy a screen separately. The hp came with windows 8 which my OH is hating. Would definitely recommend trying to get windows 7 if you go the PC route. Gaming wise, both the Asus and the hp seem to be coping fine. Petals Posted April 15, 2013 Share Posted April 15, 2013 We have a mac and windows pcs, I don't use the Mac. I prefer the monitor and separate computer as then if the screen goes its easy to replace. This has happened to me so once burned. I like having a desk top around they are easier to use than a laptop hate attaching keyboard to the lap top etc. Just not the same. I just bought an HP which is more than adequate for what I do, fast, etc. Still have my other Dell which is a very small unit and has XP which I do like for some things.
