Candygirl Posted April 7, 2013 Share Posted April 7, 2013 Perhaps this is one for the ladies! I have an awful lot of clothes, shoes and bags that I want to take with me. I have been sorting out my wardrobe in the lead up to the move as we are switching seasons here in Spain so thought it would be an ideal opportunity to sort out stuff for the charity shops. OH has said not to panic and what I cannot put into the container, we will pay excess baggage with the airline. RockDr Posted April 8, 2013 Share Posted April 8, 2013 very much depends on the airline. some airlines will charge about 50 quid per bag, other will charge ridiculous amounts per kilo overweight. you'd want to check the policies of any code-sharers on your route as the policy of the operating airline takes precedence over who you book with. Love Shoes Posted April 8, 2013 Share Posted April 8, 2013 Hi Hun, sorry but your post about having lots of shoes, clothes and bags made tickled me, you sound just like me, :wink: I didn't bring much, because I threw a lot out, it had passed its best, but I have compensated since getting here :wink: not too sure about the cost of excess baggage, but I can't imagine it being cheap .... When we first started to spend time in Spain I.e., before the big move, I sent a lot of clothing and household stuff over with a cargo company, it went airfreight, this might be cheaper, we had a pallet sent over, which was bubble wrapped and I think it was 350 pounds, from the UK to Spain, it might be worth you considering moving it this way, you will get it quicker than in your container and I would suspect it is cheaper than paying by the kilo for excess baggage, because they are quite tasty on the price of this ..... good luck Hun. will reply to your email shortly. LS - we are going to hire a one way van rental from here to the UK to take our boxes and of course the Hooligans. It was just too expensive to fly the dogs and pay a transporter as well. I have done a couple of online quotes for excess baggage and it is not a cheap option. Once I know what carrier we will be flying with, I will have to see how much they charge and then make the decision then. It seems daft to pay for a container or move cube then pay again for excess baggage. I will just have to be patient. Guest Posted April 8, 2013 Share Posted April 8, 2013 Flying with Emirates from UK to Aus (via Dubai) gets you 30kg as standard in economy. SA are tight, 20kg and that is all (unless on a permanent unvalidated visa on a one way ticket then you get double). Qantas and BA both offer a flat fee for an extra bag (about $90 iirc). 23kg. One per person, book in advance etc, T&C on their websites. Not sure if it applies to codeshares. Suggest, if none of the above are any good that you look at excess baggage companies that just fly your excess baggage and are not connected with the airline you fly with. There are a fair few around. I'd not pay the per kg excess for baggage when you fly. Its a rip off. Far better to have it fly out with another company and it be there within a week or so. I may be wrong though, it could be 23kg, I got confused reading the website! I'm concerned that my dog grooming stuff will weigh a lot, basically half my suitcase will be dresses and leggings, and half will be slicker brushes, scissors, and clippers. steveNem Posted April 9, 2013 Share Posted April 9, 2013 Excess baggage charges are crazy! Singapore airlines wanted to charge us nearly £400 to take a travel cot. Needles to say it got left with the inlaws. We shipped a few boxes of winter stuff and baby essentials before we moved (stuff we couldnt wait for the container and couldnt fit in our bags). We shipped just over 70kg and it cost us around £250. This was with PSS. I couldnt recommend them enough. It was so easy and stressfree. Delivered door to door.
